Can I Use DVD-R To Store Data Files?

I want to download tons of files, data, photos, etc. from my computer's hard drive to discs for external storage (my computer is getting too full with all my stored files).

In the past, I've used CD-R discs for this purpose, but the amount of data to be downloaded is awesome.

Isn't it possible to use the larger-capacity DVD-R discs for this purpose? Or would it be a better idea to use the CD-R's for data download?

My computer has a built-in DVD player.
