Storm Damage - ???

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

It rained all yesterday and last night.....

The last time I did my 'Brug Tour' was Tuesday night. This morning I couldn't believe the damage to 'some' of my Brugs and I am confused as to source of the damage. Any assistance anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

I pulled some really small tree limbs out of some of the holes, before I decided to take pictures, but there didn't seem to be near enough dead limbs in the pots or on the pad (upon which they reside) to account for all these holes.

The damage seems to be confined to the Brugs which were under the outer edge of the old oak tree canopy which is where the small limbs would most likely be and there in almost no damage to the brugs closer to the trunk.

I searched high and low for insects or snails/slugs. Under the pad, scratched in the flowerbeds no damage to those plants, under leaves, in the pot's soil. I found 1 slug on a leaf of a Brug but none on the Brugs with the damage.

Could a swarm of something have come in the middle of the showers, immediately after or between showers, munched out and then left?

Talk about disheartening..................

Judy, is it possible that during the night you might have had some small hail. The damage looks a lot like hail damage. I'd just watch them and if it continues and gets worse, you might have to search more to find out what is causing the damage. Since the damage was to those on the outter edge of the tree canopy, it sound very possible that it is hail.

Judy, those look like my leaves after the big hail storm a few weeks ago. The bottom leaf in the secind oicture looks like my leaves after the snail/slugs turns then loose. i have a few seedlings that just have the skelton of the leaf and snail slime all over them. Yuck.

sure is healthy looking though.. really nice .. what one is it?? blessings.... Me...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Except for the holes, those leaves are such a beautiful green. I would check the drainage holes for slugs just to be safe.

Large raindrops falling hard will beat holes in the leaves too, it happened here over the last few days, leaves look shredded.

Hey Judy,
Your leaves are so healthy and deep green.
A few years ago, we had a hail storm that demolished my entire Brug collection...as well as every other tender leaf plant in my yard. I agree you could have had some hail damage or slugs. I have defoliated many a Brug due to damage from Mother Nature or pests. Brugs are really strong and they will come back from the damage.
Whatever you are feeding your plants, you are doing an awesome job!

I have some plants right under the drip line of my oak also and it was the rain that put holes in mine. They looked just like yours, they grow fast and will recover in no time. It is the new leaves that are soft that suffer the most damage.

Judy yours looks better then mind, I just wish I had some leaves on this baby. I'm looking for some Cal/Mag Plus to arrive in the mail today and I plan on doctoring this one up, and if it doesn't start looking better then I am planning on digging it up and planting another one in its place. I wanted it to come through it's spell because it has Y'ed.

Judy, it is such a healthy plant and obviously happy in its location and no doubt it is well taken care of. The wind and rain have been terrible here and it does damage, but I have also found snails on mine. They are not the big ones but they do their damage. I think it is almost impossible to keep beautiful perfect leaves at certain times of the year on brugs. It seems that there is always something that comes along and damages them.

So what kind of fool is going to be standing in the rain under a giant oak tree amongst giant pots of flowers.... a Brug Fool, that's who.

After reading the above postings, I visited the Brugs while it was still raining and I do believe it was the rain. Some of those drops are very large and heavy. The repeated assult of the drops just destroyed these new leaves.

I couldn't find a potting soil I liked so I made up my own with the help of a cement mixer. I did it basically by smell and feel for the finished product. Whew what a job!! Afterward I wrote out what all I had put in the mix and I was afraid I had put in too much fertilizer. It could be the rapid growth of the leaves contributed to them being too fragile to withstand the heavy rains.

I went ahead and put them in the 25 gallon containers, blue tubs in the background, because I knew I would not get the opportunity to pot them up again.

I'm still learning so don't anyone go by what I have done.

2pugdogs what potting soil did you use?

Promix is the best I've ever used but I can't get it here, the distributor requires a resale tax certificate and I'm not in the business.

Judy I used Expert Perfix Mix. I used it in two other 19 gal. tubs and they are looking great. Just this one is will doing nothing.

If it were mine, I would spray it with Epsom Salt plus MiracleGro mix and then pour the remainder in the soil. See Rylaff's Epsom Salts thread. If you are going to toss anyway I would give it a health dose of each and see what happens. A teaspoon of toasted, run through the blender until it's a powder Egg Shell (calcium) watered into the soil might help also. Keep in mind you won't see results for about a week.

Good luck,

Home Depot here has started selling pro mix, and they also sell it at one of the feed/seed stores here, have you checked those places judy?

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I haven't checked HD lately, I did back in early to mid April. It's a 3 hour round trip to a "big city" but I'll surely check the next time I'm there. I haven't been able to get it for years but the last time I used it I thought it was wonderful.

Thanks so much for letting me know.

And Lowe's here has also started selling bags of Mushroom compost, so I have been mixing ProMix and Mushroom Compost about 1/2 and 1/2. It makes really nice soil, then I add Espoma PlantTone, an all organic complete granular fertilizer. I think the brugs are gonna love it.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

MaryinLa,

I am so jealous!!! Our Lowe's doesn't sell anything besides the same old stuff. I bought the last 6, 3 cubic bags of Jungle Pro Mix which I'm sure they have had for 3 years and they won't order any more in because I was the only one buying it.

You look like you have your hands full mixing that soil, Judy! I am wondering tho...Does the Puppy Chow in the far left of the picture go in the potting mix too? Perhaps that is why your Brugs look so good!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Cute!!! No that was my trash bag, but I put lots of other stuff in there!!! Here is the link to the thread in the Datura Forum where I give the recipe.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

THANKS FOR THE INFO, I didn't know that.

Judy here is a better picture of it sitting next to one that was planted in same soil. One is doing much better then the other.

I'm done, I have been trying to find out what picture size I want to go with when posting. Other words I have been playing. I am so sorry Judy for butting in on your thread. But you always have the greatest looking plants.

Waxhaw (Charlotte), NC(Zone 7b)

I second the hail damage. this was how my hostas looked last year.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

2pugdogs you can "but into" my threads any time you want!!! That one looks like a wormy pup beside the other one. I think I would gently unpot him and take a look at his roots, something is definitely wrong with him cause it surely looks like you're doing everything right!!

Judy

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Twyla,

You asked which plant this was. I'm proud to report that it is from YOUR Isabella. Thanks again for thinking about me when you were dealing with your health issues. So kind of you!!!

Judy
