You might try one of the feeders with ant moats like the hummzinger

those are nice hummer feeders although quite expensive...I already have 4 hummer feeding and dont wanna spent anymore money...so i will search for a cheaper method. However when it is time for me to invest in some more feeders I will get those that are ant/bug proof.

You can make your own ant trap out of a short length of coat hanger wire and a spray bottle cap and some waterproof caulk. Works fine. Drill a small hole in the cap, push the hanger wire thru and caulk the hole so water doesn't leak out. Make hooks on both ends of the wire. Just hang between the feeder and the pole or branch. Becky

PS: Lowe's sells one similar to the humzingers from perky-pet for 9.99.

I used to have problems with the big black ants too. They would even eat through the yellow plastic "flowers" on the feeder. Then I found this resin goo called Tanglefoot. It works great! Just smear it around the base of the pole or branch you hang the feeder from. Good luck!

THANKS FOR THE ADVISE--I'M READY TO TRY ANYTHING. JUST CHECKED MY FEEDER AND IT WAS FULL OF ANTS. HOW THEY GOT THROUGH ALL OF THAT VASELINE BEATS ME. I WATCHED FOR A WHILE, BUT COULD'T DETERMINE HOW THEY WERE GETTING ON THE FEEDER----BETH

I have a humzinger and I still get ants! The other day I bet there were 20+ in the feeder. I even had water in the moat! Yuch!

Try a little mineral oil in the moat, too. Read that some place.

Okay, will do!
