Have a Question

Has anyone ever put one in the garden? I figured that God started them here, so it must be able to be done....I'm just chicken.....

I've read that they're strictly houseplants here. They originated in the mountains of Africa (like in Tanzania?), but I'm not sure what it is that they need outdoors that they can't get in the U.S.... Maybe our temperatures fluctuate too much? I know that in the Andes the temperatures are quite stable year-round. That's a guess. Someone else probably knows, but I thought I'd put in my two cents for now. :)

Hap,
I was reading an article that said the only reason they don't do well outside is because of the temps, too much rain, bugs etc... but ya know I wondered the same thing myself.
The article stated that the ones most likely to do well were the original saintipaulis that were collected from the wild.
S.ionantha was one that was mentioned and is fairly easy to get. It is a big standard and blooms easily. Or maybe one of the old trailers.

I think some of them would fair pretty well on a covered porch or patio. Most of the garden centers have them outside under shade cloth... check your local Wal Mart and Lowe's they always have them outside. At the price of $2.00 or so for one and as easy as they are to grow, you would not loose much if it didn't thrive.
I'm considering putting some of mine out on my covered patio because of the space limitaitons. There's a fan out there and the light is perfect! So... we shall see what comes of them.

Outside, they are already and loving it....I wanted GROUND. LOL

I have them in my pool lanai on bakers rack...They are getting sun about 4pm on. and loving it. They are bright eyed and bushy tailed and blooming their little hearts out. It also gets about 95 out there. Go figure....

You know most of the AV's we buy are grown in an outside green house so I don't understand why they would not do anything but great.
