Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Batten down the hatches, Pam and Joelle!

Quoting:
Tornado watch for
Moose Jaw - Pense - Central Butte - Craik issued

At 12:05 PM CST a funnel cloud was spotted 20 km northwest of Moose Jaw. Further funnel clouds are possible in the watch area this
afternoon and early this evening. Conditions are favourable for the
development of funnel clouds or weak tornadoes. These types of funnel
clouds form out of large cumulus clouds or very weak thunderstorms
and normally do not have the energy to reach the ground. However one
or two of these funnels may briefly touch down and can become
destructive over a very small area. Treat all funnel clouds and
tornadoes seriously and avoid when possible. Should one develop
overhead take shelter until it dissipates. Remember these funnel
clouds will normally appear with little or no warning.

OMG, be safe, I'd be hiding in the basement. Let us know later how it went

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Yeppers we've been talking about that one.......am working out in the garden right now (in the rain) and am crossing fingers and toes big time that it stays far, far away from human habitation and that the stinking hail stays away as well. Visiting greenhouses and trailer courts have been crossed off my list today.

Has your weather settled down now Pam?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Blue sky right now......lots of thunder and lightning earlier. I'm not sure if it will come back or not..... I haven't looked at the weather channel lately. I'm going by the adage if you don't think about it maybe it won't come to pass......hope not anyways since DS is working at the edge of town tonight.

In the end two were sighted not too far from town. Not sure if they touched down or not.

I got a little twister come through my yard monday, May 31st. A special one just for me I guess. Took out my garden shed and wrecked a storage shed next to it. The bases were cemented in but it ripped through the screws. Here are some pixs. Amazingly, the mulch wasn't even disturbed in the flower beds around them. My delphinium on one side got squahed though when the wall fell.

And one more. Replacing theses with bigger wooden hip roof sheds. My husband is erecting them as we speak.

Oh Songbird!!!!!! :( What a rotten development!! :(

.....on the plus side however your mulch has come thro unscathed. ;) You and your family must be soooooo relieved it didn't have too much ooomph and that it didn't get your house!!! :S

So sorry to hear of the damage you sustained and your poor delphinium the other day. Those dang little twisters that race through the prairies can be such a pain. I have a blue delphinium that is growing almost too big in my flower bed. If you haven't got another one by this fall, I'd be happy to send you a piece of mine.

Good Luck. :Donna

Actually I think it will survive. I had a tomato cage around it and it bent over at the ground level. A few branches broke but there is still enough of it there that it will survive. My perennials are pretty sturdy as they have to poke there heads out in the wind and grow in it or die! I may be nuts trying to garden in such a harsh environment but what can i say, I'm nuts about gardening! Besides, I figure if I keep on planting eventually I'll have us sheltered in here.
We are releived that it wasn't bigger. Usually they are small here though. Still, I feel like a sitting duck though because I have no basement to go into if it were to be bad. In this case, there was only time to blink. There was no time no go anywhere or I would have went inside the house. I was standing in my greenhouse which is screwed to my deck, about 70 feet away from where my shed was. I didn't even see or here them being blown apart it was that fast. It took maybe 3 seconds for all of that to happen.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Yikes! Thankful you weren't anywhere around that shed. Those little buggers can do serious damage. They should stay out in the middle of the pastures and crop fileds were the belong. tsk, tsk...

Medicine Hat, AB(Zone 3a)

I'll second that motion!

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

those twisters made the newspaper here.

So glad you didn't have more damage, and are safe.

Linda

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Yikes! Glad the damage was limited.

Isn't it curious, how it wrought havoc with your shed but left the mulch alone. Tornado lore is full of anecdotes like that, about how the damage is so localized and unpredictable.

Thanks for the photos, Brenda. Hope the reconstruction goes smoothly.

Fair winds,
Shannon
