The heavens will swallow me up! I have lost the tag telling me who this GORgeous cutting came from. Please embarass me and tell me who you are!!! Please! I love the foliage on this brug...it is about 3' high.
AureaWhite X Rothkirk
It is very nice foliage.. not seen any like it either.. every day i see something new..
Carole, I'm growing this same seedling out for Kyle C....tag is reading Aurea White x New Rothkirch. It's about the same size as your's so you must have gotton these when I got mine around Feb.
Whats the difference between New Rothkirch and just Rothkirch by itself I wonder. Is there?
Hugs
Julie
It is a pretty seedling. I love the leaves.
Julie, I am not sure, but when RK was offered a couple of years ago by Native Habitat, a few people doubted it was the same as the RK that was in European circulation. As I recall there was a kerfuffle over it. So there was talk of calling it New RK. But I think it was decided it was the same one, though I could be wrong.
What a beautiful cutting you have there. Looks nothing like any of mine. A lot of mine has little holes in the leaves and your color is so much more beautiful then any of mine.
I hope you find out who send it to you.
Very nice plant, hoping to see blooms soon. Keep us posted.
One thing about Brugs and your generousities...I am learning what a lousy records keeper I am and that my memory is about shot!!!
I LOVE the foliage on that plant!!! It is the only one that came out...and I am hoping the flowers will be as awesome as the leaves...for you too, Julie!!!
Way to grow! I got a bit of a head start...but yours will be up there in no time! Is this brug known for being fairly bug resistent? I haven't had a hole from a slug, cat, beetle or a thrip or a mite or a white fly or a ......
Aloha
I don't know lol if it's bug resistant or not yet....not this cross anyway. I read some of past posts on the Rothkirch after reading Kell's post and one of them said that the Rothkirch plant itself does attract bugs but lets hope this cross won't. hehehe I'll be waiting to see a pic when your's blooms since it's probably going to first. I love the color so far as you do.
One of the post I read about Rothkirch is that it has dark green leaves, like almost a tobacco plant leaf, (leafs get really big) and has toothed leafs at the end of the leaf and more rounder closest to the stem....I'm excited now to see what this will look like. Thanks Kell for telling me about that...it made me want to find out more about the species itself. Seems as though it was worked out to be the same as you stated
I can only imagine what the aurea white will do for this plant, wow!!!!
Hugs
Julie
The leaves sure sound as you describe, Julie. My heart skips a beat everytime I see it. Rothkirk from Kell is growing nearby and it could be the difference in sizes (and she was attacked by a monster swarm of red spider mites which probably unnerved her!). The blue-ish green hue of this brugs leaves is so happy!!!
Aloha,
Carol
Yep, that's it! That's another description of Rothkirch I forgot to mention. So you have the Rothkirch from Kell also and the aureawhite x Rothkirch? If you do, wow, you lucky girl you!!! :-) That's awesome....I hope the spider mites don't get to her, it seems like the fuzzy green-leafed one's don't get mites as much or often at all opposed to the light colored lime green leafed ones.
Good luck and I'll be watching closely woooooo hoooooooo!!!
Hugs
Julie
The aurea X aurea will be great for your breeding program!
It finally quit raining enough for me to take this photo of Aurea White x New Rothkirch (pink); I planted the seeds 02.22.05; about 6 weeks later, she was put into a tomato success kit and remained there until recently, she was transplanted two days ago and is not quite up to par yet. She is 24 inches exactly, and her leaves are more blue than this photo shows, and very fuzzy, and very big, and so are the leaves of her next door neighbor to the right, a PB x C. Rosen Quartz seedling, both seedlings are unusually bug resistant, at least for my part of Arky. Kyle Courtney, most generously, sent me the seeds. Carol and Julie, are yours seedlings or cuttings - if they're seedlings, when did you plant and how long has yours been in the ground, Carol?? Julie, how tall is yours?? Carol, my leaves look much 'softer' than yours, but there has been zero sun since she was transplanted on Monday...
I forgot what I was going to change.

OH GOSH...I confuse easily. I will keep your photos in mind when I check on mine in the morning!
Date? All that is gone into the trash by a well meaning helper. I use slats of blinds and the kid thought...Oh well...my fault for not making it clearer!
Carol ;>(
Hi Sherry, I received seeds to grow out from Kyle Courtney as well. I believe when I was writing on the marker the date 2-17-05, I meant that was the planting date of the seed. Not the repotting date lol...Must not have had my coffee that morning. I'm notorious for making boo boo's when I type if no caffeine is in the system yet LOL.... They are tall but the leafs aren't as big as yours yet. I may have gotten a slower start than you. But at any rate, after I started applying the ES and fertilizing them regularly they've taken off. I hope to be planting them soon along with the other seedlings I'm growing out for Linda Thorpe, Kristi/Datdog, Brugie & Kell.
Sherry I'll measure them tomorrow for you and post it. I just love the color of the leafs. Your leafs look very much like mine. They are somewhat smooth and some fuzzy. I'm so excited to see what they'll look like once they start to Y and put out blooms!
Will update as I see more growth. Let us see pics as your's progesses too! This is exciting!
Hugs
Julie
Carol & Julie, I was so excited to learn that I actually grew a seedling that others have that I totally forgot to tell you both how nice your seedlings are - I cannot wait until they bloom!!! I wonder if there are seedlings from this cross that have already bloomed, anyone know?? It's lots of fun seeing other babies from the same litter, lol...
Carol, lovely plant - is it a seedling or a cutting?
Julie & Sherry, I am also growing out AW X NR from Kyle's cross. I started 12 seeds on Nov 14, 2004 and have 10 growing in different areas of my yarden. One had such nice leaves that I sent a photo to Kyle. All of that is in my 'home' computer, I'll try to remember to post a photo later.
I asked Kyle about 'New' Rothkirch and his explanation was that it is a hybrid, grown by Dr Preissel(sp?) and sent to a hybridizer in the USA. It carries this name because it looks exactly like Rothkirch the wildform.
Linda, did you post a photo of one of the leaves on another thread?? If so, was that one of the seeds started on Nov 14?? I'm interested, too, Carol, is yours a cutting or a seedling?? Linda I'm going to try to find the large leaf you posted to see if mine looks anything like yours. I love watching seedlings like mine grow, this is one of the most fun parts of growing these fascinating plants - what in the world did we ever do before brugs, digitals and the internet??
Carol - the very first photo looks much like my Whiskers. I wonder if they may be relatives.
Boy, I wish I had Whiskers, so I'd know too!! I look at Carol's, then I go look at mine, then I look at Julie's, and I'm thinking maybe the difference is because ours are younger or maybe it's because Julie and I live on the biggest island, ya think??
lol Sherry!
You know...I wish the generous soul who sent it to me would fess up!!! I think (now, there's a less in futility) it may have come as a green cutting ... It is too BIG for a seedling and it isn't a hard wood cutting. Gotta love it...it is so perfect!!
;>)
WOWIE, Linda, yours is beautiful, looks almost identical to Carol's, boy, am I ever impressed!!!
My leaves are 16 inches long and 9 inches wide on one plant, and 15 inches long and 10 inches wide on another plant. I do think the more mine grows, the more serrated the leaves seem to become, cross your fingers for me, I want my plant to look just like yours and Carol's!!!
Yes...Linda...yours does look like mine! Sherri.... It is so Clean and Healthy!!! Sherri...when yours grows up it will look like that too...except, as seedlings, they could like like anything...right?
Aloha
Hahahaha, it better, Carol, or I'll send it to Brugna Gladley for adoption!! Okay, I see that the leaves Linda measured are not as serrated as her upper leaves and it appears that is the case with your plant too, Carol. I think Julie's plant and my plant are twinkies, and they are three full months younger than yours and Linda's, right?? If so, I'm hoping the age difference is the difference. Mine appear to be more serrated every day and they are 'blue', that is for sure. Isn't it just fascinating that yours and Linda's look so much alike, the same as Julie's and mine look alike. Maybe brugs will be like Goldens - I can look at almost any well bred Golden at tell you who his ancestors are, but I didn't learn it overnight...and I already know that the process is a long one with brugs...
So, now we have 4 seedlings to compare!!! What FUN!
Isn't the "blueness" gorgeous. Will have to plant a lot of orange around it...bromiliads probably for good contrast!! Some of the bromiliads can get very orange in full sun.
Aloha,
Carol
I LOVE the blue, I didn't have it last year, but I have lots of blue this year, wow, and, yep, it's lots of fun having four to compare and i hope some others will show up with them too!!!
and the plants all around are being slug attacked. I'm likeing the aurea more and more. I've got to fine the other 8.
Such a rich, dark, beautifully colored leaves, Linda, wow!!! How long have yours been in the ground?? Yours should bloom this season or fall for sure. I cannot wait to see what you get!! Mine are suffering from transplant blues, I've had to move them several times because of last minute plan changes and expanded construction. We've had rain and I'm going to try to stay ahead of the slugs, I HATE them!!!!
Sherry....make those bands out of alumcans...they really work.
I think I have some other seedlings too...wonder where they are?
I am about to dis the temperamental ones...mite infested rags. Where do they come off being more important than my lunch?
LOL ;>)
Auntie Kalola, I sent seeds of this cross to you last fall when I sent to others....so yours is probably a seedling. The parent plant (aurea white ) was a seedling from seeds bought in England.Took 4 years for the first flowers...had humongous leaves and grew like a true tree!.This pic is the actual flower that the seeds came from. :-) hope we get some great pale pink to pink flowers..........knowing the curse of Kyle they will be white!!!!!!!!GGGR! LOL
Aloha nui loa
Kyle,
If I get a white that looks anywhere near that good from the seeds you sent, I will be one happy camper.
Judy
Carol, I'm afraid of the alumcans because I have too much traffic, barefoot traffic, the grands and my dogs, I don't think the cats would be bothered by them. I'm going to use copper wire this afternoon; however, I'm putting out boards, like my new, local gardening guru told me, and I haven't had any slugs in almost a week - now, I think I have a small (is that possible) infestation of cats, picked one off yesterday, grrrr. So, I'm closing up shop, in favor of shopping and a late bruch with some pals, new chef and the food is supposed to be better than great, with several French wines, ooooh la la, we have a designated driver!!
