Natural Pond...Now It's Green!

Iola, WI

We rent a house that has a natural pond. It was a low boggy area with a natural spring that has a low flow of water to a lake. Originally it was back-hoed to form the pond. This was several years ago.

Last year and now starting in the early spring this year there is a green growth on the surface of the water. The landlord tried to "herd" the scum to the draining edge of the pond but it grew back. I haven't taken a close enough look at it to describe it yet, but I will if it will help.

This pond has been in existence without this surface growth for at least 10 years, any help would be appreciated!!

If the pond has become filled with decaying vegitation, this could be causing an algae growth on the surface.
Increasing the water flow through the bog area and/or dredging the bottem could help. Another alternative would be to plant things like Water Lilies that would take up the nutrients being generated by the decaying vegitation and they would also provide some surface coverage, thereby reducing the amount of sunlight gettin to the algae and causing it to bloom.

Thanks Much RA!

I'll pass this along to the Landlord.
