Not garden related, but need help!

North Saanich, Canada

Hi everyone. Sorry to post this here, but I am needing some ideas. Our cat has suddenly decided after 6 months, that it will be nice to sit on top of the car-CONVERTIBLE!!!! So far, it is just hair, but I am afraid he will damage the soft top and we sure don't want that. Others have just told me to get rid of the cat!!!!! That's not an option, because it is my son's, and we do like to have a cat around here to keep down the rodent population. Any ideas you would have to gently let the cat know he is not welcome there???
Thanks.

use a water pistol on the cat everytime he gets up there. Sooner or later he'll get the idea that going up on the roof means he'll get squirted. LOL, the cat's got good taste Glenda.

LOL, I was telling my DH about your problem Glenda. And his reply was "Put the Fear of God into them!" We have 2 cats and used to own a convertible up until 3 months ago. Every time one of the two cats would try and jump on that car, (or any of our vehicles, for that matter) he would bellow at them, and they KNOW that his word is LAW. Never had much of a problem. :D

Good Luck with yours, hope you find a viable solution.

I'll have to try the water pistol. I know my son used to try that with his cats when they jumped on things they shouldn't. Trouble is, I'll have to be sitting out there all day to catch him!!! LOL!

Maybe I'll have to get a supersoaker and have fun while I'm at it!!!

lol! "get rid of the cat"....SHEESH! Clearly not cat people.

I think there are sprinklers that are activated by motion detectors, if you wanted to go that route. Good luck! Let us know how you make out.

You could try the same trick we use for the dogs and no no furniture. Set a few mousetraps, then cover with a very light sheet (so the poor critter doesn't actually get hurt) and leave it. Any time the kitty jumps up, the traps will be set off and scare the you know what out of them. It doesn't take very long and the beauty of it is that you don't actually have to be there.

Have you tried cat repellent? I don't know if it's still available but we used to have some years ago for keeping the cats out of the flower bed.

I like the idea of the mousetraps under a sheet. Would be easy enough to move when you need to go out. We have a couple of the scarecrow sprinklers in our yard, to deter deer from eating the fruit trees. They sure work on the deer. The one bad thing about them is you always get sprayed with water when you forget they are there!!!!!! But that might be worth a try too. Won't hurt the outside of the car to get wet.

I like that Mousetrap idea. It could be used in a myriad of situations.

Water pistol is a good idea, or use a spray bottle of water and say loudly "NO!" at the same time. Soon you'll just have to say "Hisssss" and "No". And then just the "no". Shouldn't take more than a couple of days, and then in a few days you may have to reinforce when he tries to get away with it again..

Teach your cat that "No" when not responded to will result in something unpleasant--like the water pistol, or spray bottle, or your anger. The spray bottle works really well for cats that start scratching furniture, also.

Hey Rosemary. Nice to hear from you again. How's that garden growing?

Hey Rosemary, how's your garden, you're not in the way of any fires up that way I hope.

Hi guys--I'm very pressured these days--garden will grow a lot better once I get all those poor little plants into it! So I just drop into DG briefly, a few times a week. hate thinking I'm missing something, but there it is.

Donna, my friend in Castlegar just sent pics of his roses, and his Beauty Bush (tree?)--Wow! Sure wish I could grow things like that here.

Where does your friend live in Castlegar, Rosemary? I know, I am still overwhemed by all the gorgeous and different trees, shrubs and flowers that they have here that we didn't have in Alberta. My neighbors are getting used to me always hounding them..., What's the name of that one?
