epi question

Chapel Hill, NC(Zone 8a)

I noticed one of my epi cuttings had 2 buds forming....should I pinch it to promote root growth or will it do ok left alone, maybe even flowering if I'm lucky? I read this on a website:

Sometimes a new cutting will produce a bud (or many) shortly after being potted, sometimes within days. This is probably due to cues and processes started when the leaf was still on the parent plant (though it may also be a befuddled response to systemic stress). If your new cutting does this, I suggest you pinch off the new bud (i.e. do not allow the plant to flower). Producing flowers puts a fair amount of stress on the plant. In a big plant this is relatively insignificant, but in a new plant you want to emphasize root growth and more vegetation before letting it flower.

But, I know that plants grow differently for different ppl/places....anyone have any experience with an epi cutting budding and want to help advise?
thanks,

Three years ago, almost four, a friend gave me my first epi cutting with a bud on it, it was a really small piece, and I let it go ahead and flower because I had never seen one. Well, it has grown some, and this year it finally had a bud on it.. it took an awful long time to get going here. This is it.. I just love it. So maybe there is some truth to that statement above about getting roots.

This is so beautiful and very big flower, do you have the plant in this color only, please share photos of other colors if you have?

Hello Kaleem -

There are several existing threads where many members have posted images of their Epiphyllum flowers. If you have a few hours to sit and look at them all, why not start with these threads. :-)

Hi Katherine -

STOP !! LOL.......if you haven't already murdered them, please read below. If you have already done the dastardly deed, no harm done.....although you are a stronger person than I am.

Just another opinion for you........I have never pinched a bud and they still bloom. Why deny yourself a little bit of instant gratification????

Yeah, don't pinch... you will lhave a very long wait.. like me (I agree with Candy).. Anyway, they will still grow. So enjoy the blooms.

I wouldn't pinch off just leave it alone and pot up until you will see bloom...

Thanks for the advice ladies, I'm such a newbie w/ these plants! I counted, and have 16 different species (all cuttings at this point) so maybe in a few years I'll be able to share some and be more of a participant in the epi discussions here at DG - I've really enjoyed reading all the posts about them.

I wouldn't pinch them off either. If there is not enough energy for blooms, then the buds will drop on their own.

Antoinette, do you know the name of that one?

Mesilla Park, NM

Clare, it was marked Coral Red. It has grown some this year, but not much, I will move it into it's own pot this fall and try to get to grow some more.., It has one bud on it this year, but it did grow one very long arm and is growing another one (if that is what they are called) I forgot the EPI lingo..lol

LOL! Thanks, Antoinette!

Katherine - any day that Epi buds are saved from pinching is a good day. :-)

Kaleem, you are very welcome! I hope you join us as our discussions of these beauties continue. We've been at it steadily since January, with no end in sight! :-)

Candy, how will we know if we get our own forum? Will Dave respond to the new forum request thread with a "yay" or "nay"?

Northern California, CA

Nagging helps, amount of interest, system and time constraints also come into the mix.

Sometimes it seems that "needing" a new forum (want, have to have, dying for etc) isn't enough without some justification for the necessity of a new forum, which is by amount of interest, prior threads.....it's a mystery. See the thread regarding a "Dahlia Forum" over on the Dave's Garden Forum for the comments on that particular request.

I only live here and aside from a tantrum or two I don't know how to make it happen.......:-) LOL

LOL, Candy. I understand. It just seems like a few different forums have threads about epi's so it might be nice to have them all in one place. I know many people are interested in epi's and cacti and succulents of all sorts, but I mainly go to the Succulents and Cacti forum only to scan for epi threads:-) I'm off to check out the Dahlia Forum thread. Thanks.
