Globemaster Allium

Citrus Heights, CA

WOW! Has anybody grown this one...is it for real? does it really get that big? Lisa

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

It rocks!

Citrus Heights, CA

Tombakk, well I guess that says it all!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you have anyother kind or color planted around it? Lisa

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

Do weeds count?

Just kidding (sort of) mine is with a couple other (smaller) allium and a bunch of orange tulips.

Lisa,

Is there a picture posted and I am not seeing it? I bought some of those from the Fall Blooming Bulb Coop. I planted them and all the allium came up right away. Looks like a bunch of onion patches, still haven't had bloom one from any of them.

Do you know when I can expect something pretty?

I have some that have held their flowers for about a month. The flower heads are approaching the size of bowling balls. LOL One even has a little proliferation on it that looks like a mini ball above it. :) Hmm, I think those huge ones might be the Gladiator ones. They are much bigger than the Globemaster I have. Geeze, I am confused. I'll have to look in the morning. LOL I'll post a pic too.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I had to look them up to see if I was losing my mind.

They do seem to get smaller each year for me. The foliage looks dreadful when the flower is open. I've been using a scissors to reduce the ugly leaves.

The dried heads look lovely on the earth if you don't have lots of wind to blow them around. Some people spray them with silver or gold for Christmas decorations.

If I can find the photo, from my old digital camera's program, I'll attach it to show them on the ground.

It took ten minutes but I found the photo. It wouldn't open for me so I hope it opens on the screen.

Guess it didn't work.

Do you see the whacky little alien baby flower sticking off the top? LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

This is the ripening seed head on one of my Globemaster. It is not nearly as big as the Gladiator. I am wondering if they have started blooming smaller over the years?

Is it time for them to bloom yet? I have been waiting all winter. Please tell me...................

Mine are almost done Molly. :(

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Awww, whine, whine, that's not fair. I specifically picked out the Zone 10 bulbs in this coop. Onion grass is all I got. The Sky Blue lilies were sposed to bloom in april may, havent seen a hair.

Alright, I shall go find the complaints department.

Sorry........................................

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Now that you have me in an onion mood.....LOL This one is Star of Persia. The flower is just as big but very open and airy and on a shorter stem.

I'm sorry Molly. Aren't your seasons different down there with that high of a zone? I was thinking they are flip flopped or something. I am also thinking onions need some sort of cool period. Am I wrong?

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Chele,

I don't know about the cooling period. That's why I specifically searched for Zone 10 bulbs. I had maybe 5 hyacinths pop up, 2 bloomed in the stalk. Otherwise out of 105 bulbs/ plants, the success rate is pretty low.

I just have to find the coop and the vendor. Luckily the vendor guaranteed the bulbs. Sorry, didn't mean to burden you.

I find globle master being a bit dull in color. Maybe because I grow them in shade, but I like purple sensation better.

Molly, you could never burden me doll! I just feel bad that your bulbs are not doing well. :( Just think of all the cool stuff you can grow that I can't! That oughta cheer you up a bit. LOL

Kin, I had never thought to try them in shade. Is the color in your photo the actual color in person? You aren't calling mine dull are ya? LOL My Globemasters are going to seed now and I don't know if I got pics of them blooming this year or not. They have been here awhile....

Waxhaw (Charlotte), NC(Zone 7b)

No I am not calling you or your allium dull.. I am calling my globemasters dull. The colors are pretty well captured by the camera. The two first pictures I posted are the globemasters and they are a dirty purple, or silvery color. Nothing like the vivid purple of the smaller allium purple sensation.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I was just ribbing you. :) I have never tried them in the shade. I think I have Sensation out there somewhere as well as moly and a bunch of others. They are nice hardy little guys.

Badseed: I thought according to dutchbulb.com that Globemaster was suppose to be larger than Gladiator. The colors of them look different on the website than they do in everyones pictures. Lisa

So many catalogs show these pictures of huge heads with a kid standing next to them for comparison. From the size of our allium heads I have to wonder where they get all these kids with tiny heads!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi, everybody---I posted an Allium question http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/517635/

and I think some of you will have the answers. Please give me your thoughts. Love the idea of planting more alliums in my yard, just am not sure which ones...

Also, my allium from last year did not really return this year to speak of...do you have luck with perennializing them? Just wondering... some have said they get small the second year...wonder if that is because of fertilizer issues...

Thanks again. (BTW Love this thread. ) t.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Might be true, hadn't thought of that. I'm afraid if we fertilize we'd live in a jungle!

Here's the 3rd year for this Mt. Everest :) No fertilizer, just never touch them once they've bloomed; let them totally die back. The stems are so strong the 'spent' blooms are nice architechtural interest around the garden :)

These tiny heads are not only with Allium Globe masters but also saw with Dinner plate size Dahlias.

Dea, I agree with you about architectural interest wholeheartedly! When they finally fell off last year I "placed" them on the earth and they looked so great for so long. I hoped for a few seedlings but didn't get one. I'll try again to find the photo. I put the heads in with the young coleus.

Sorry, couldn't find it.

Saw this link and thought of this thread! I think you all have started a trend...

Mine are just now beginning to set the flower stalks....probably won't have blooms till July. Can't Wait!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Mine have looked good for a few weeks now. I'll try and find a good shot.

All of my larger alliums bloomed before my smaller ones. Seems like it should have been the other way around.
