Beefsteak Plant 'Magilla'

These 2 beefsteak plants 'Magilla' (Perilla) were the same colors when I bought them. The one on the left has been in shade and the one on the right in sun. Note the difference in the foliage color.

They are both very attractive, Hazel!
Light certainly does make a huge difference in some plants.
Have you tried saving seed from 'Magilla'? I have regular green perilla and the purple form as well. They both come true from seed (with great abundance). I still have not found 'Magilla' for sale in our area to try it.

My Peruvian lily is STILL sending up bloomstalks! I've lost count of how many, but I am absolutely thrilled with that plant.

Yep! Interesting, isn't it! Mine did the same thing last year. I had several in the shadegarden (for color), and they ended up washingout to green/pink like yours above! This year I put them in places that get a little morning sun in that garden, and planted a few more in my regular garden. Great plant!!!

Hi Hazel, I first heard of this plant when I read that Jimmy Turner (Director of the Dallas Arboretum) said that everyone should have it. At first it was difficult to locate and I am glad that I found it. It looks like a coleus that you grow in full sun, doesn't it? I wish it were a perennial. Hope you are doing well!

Toxicodendron, I have never seen any seeds on the 'Magilla'. Cuttings root easily just like coleus do. We have had an abundance of rain the past few days which was well needed. Wow, my pruvian lillies have quit blooming except for one plant. I am so glad that it has performed well for you. Thanks for your comments.

Lynne, last year I had put mine in shade for the purple colors and was disappointed when it changed colors. As an experiment, I put the one on the left back in more sun next to the other one and they now have identical coloration. It took about a week or 10 days. Thanks for your comments.

Ann, so good to hear from you. You are right. They are so similar to coleus. I sure wish that they were perennial too. I am going to take cuttings this fall because they ae so expensive here. A generous fellow DGer sent me cuttings. I am making steady progress in my recovery and am able to work in my yard again ... just a lot slower than I used to be. I hope all is going great for you. No seeds on 'Magilla' sounds like a good thing. The regular perillas look very weedy once they start making flower/seed stalks.

We just had a tremendous storm roll through early this morning with torrential rain and high winds. Sorry, I couldn't make it go your way. It headed southeast. You probably didn't want this kind of storm anyway. .

I know I am going to jinx myself for saying this, but we have been fortunate to not have any BAD storms and hail for about 2 years now. Usually we get several each spring. I just put a sump pump in the creek and started watering from that today. The plants like the warm water.
