Tropical Sunset?

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

If anyone out there has a TS, I would love to have one. I'll pay anything for it. Email me if you do :-)

Hugs

I was sold two that are supposed to be TS and they both bloomed in the hoop house but both were solid yellow. None of the orange band around the curve like the pictures show. :( They only had a citrusy fragrance that was very powerful. We'll see what happens with the one planted in ground. If you get no other offers I may be able to start a cutting soon but as I said... I think I got mislabeled plants. :(

You can tell by the calyx and the color if you have Tropical Sunset or not. The calyx is puffy and covers part of the corolla tube. This isn't a great picture, but it is Tropical Sunset. I received this plant from Calalily several years ago.

I have a cutting that I got last Fall. Hoping to see it bloom this year but everything seems to me to be slow growing this year!! hehehe Maybe just impatient?? Have several others as well all growing but still not far above the ground!!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Blaine, check out Tequila Sunrise, another TS that is solid yellow.

Julie, did you get a Tropical Sunset? I have a scrawny rooted cutting that you're welcome to for postage, I can also take cuttings to go with it, but you'll have to root them.

You have mail! Woooooo hoooooooo

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

AH Blaine.. so did the one you sent me turn out to have yellow blooms also? (You were hoping they looked a bit more orange) Not that I mind. I like the yellows also!

I did mention this in the separate email that neither one of them bloomed like what web pictures show, including the gallery where I bought it. The second one (which your cutting came from) was a bit darker and I thought there may have been some orangish tint but it may also have been the natural darkening as the bloom was past-tense and getting ready to drop. It's been in ground for a week and there are a couple of new buds I think, so we'll see what happens. If it grows for you, it's still a good deal as a freebie I guess. Me? It's not the first and not the last time I've bought something (plants or otherwise) that's not what I expected. I just move on.

I am still happy :) thanks

I just purchased a Tropical Sunset through eBay. Thank you, Brugie, for the ID clues to look for. I sure hope mine is really Tropical Sunset.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Thanks for the pic Brugie. Now I know what I am looking for. This is "not a TS". The calyx is long and rather elegant looking. The orange keeps getting darker on it. Very pretty. Frankly I do not know how you all ID any of these things, there are so many. sorry the pic is not darker-shooting at the sun.

Whatever it is, I know I like it better than TS. It certainly flowers well. I'd call it a keeper no matter who it is.

Frogs, she is a very pretty brug by any measure.

And the tadpoles find the roots tasty. Look closely. They are starting to get their legs. Metamorphasis is truely amazing.

A quick note about Tropical Sunset. I have grown it for years and depending on the weather, etc. the orange around the skirt will appear differently. It is not always dark orange. It is a beauty when it is dark orange. If the weather is to hot it is lighter. It is the showest in the fall with cool nights and warm days.

Great picture Barb. I had one but haven't been able to find it this year. I hope it is not one I let my DH destroy. It is a pretty brug.

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

Barb.. how do the blooms hold up in full sun on that one. it looked waxy and I thought it would do well?

San Jose, CA

i've had one for several years but it's never bloomed yet. it's developed flowers buds which either dried up and fell off or got damaged over winter.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Oh I just love your tadpoles frogs!! They sure are growing!

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Jazz, TS will wilt in midday sun but perks back up in evening. It is one of he few yellows that don't get sick and die.

Thanks Kell-if you need a new one let me know.

Barb thanks for information. The first blooms on both of mine were in the hoop house so daytime temps were around 90. Maybe that's it and I'll see something different now. Since the larger one was moved to the half-barrel out front it's started setting quite a few buds. I definitely noticed the daily wilt or I thought it was kind of closing up like tulips at night. Peaches and Cream doesn't wilt at all.

The two plants mentioned in this thread went the whole summer without another bloom.

Now they have both started blooming with the puffy calyx described by Brugie and with cool nights and no 90's I have the orange. Looks just like catalogue pick.

Here's one

Thats a beaut Blaine. I bought one off of ebay some months back and it had spider mites when I got it. Fought those darned things for 2 months. It has now come out of it and getting ready to Y. Certainly hope after all I went through with it that it is a Tropical Sunset. If not, I know where I got it.

Guess that is what feedback is for.
