I am putting this crepe myrtle in this barrel permanently. It will get full sun. It is very hot in this spot. It's on the west side. The crepe myrtle is supposed to get to be about 3 feet high.
I want to put a low growing perenniel plant that will flow down the sides. Nothing that will take fertilizer. The crepe myrtle won't like that. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Julie
crepe myrtle in a barrel
Verbena would be pretty. How about a mixture of perennials. The varigated trailing vinca is pretty.

Verbena... that's a really good idea. Verbena is low growing and will spill out the sides. What other perennials do you think would look good with this?
is it a dwarf crepe myrtle? I never heard of one staying that short. I have a nice old crepe myrtle that is abour 35 feet tall. Love it.
Yes, it is a dwarf. The tag said that the height should be 3 feet.
So did mine but its 5ft already!!
A potted plant will run out of nutrients and has no way of getting them unless you provide them in the way of fertilizer. Is there a reason why you don't plan on fertilizing? The accepted advice is not to overfertilize as it will sacrifice flowers in favor of leaves, but they do need fertilizer.
I had always heard that you don't fertilize crepe myrtles. Is that not true?
htop said she's had a miniature (not dwarf) crepe myrtle for three years, and it's only about 5 inches tall. Here's the link she posted, perhaps they have some info for you about care and feeding of small crepes in containers:

maggie - wonderful site, you cannot keep doing this now I have even more on my want list.... oh well never will get them all . . . Mitch
:-)
wow that is a wonderful website. love those hanging baskets and the groundcover ones.
That is a great website. I hope that my crape myrtle (spelling it correctly now) looks like the one on the website. It is also in a whiskey barrel.
Crape, crepe, I never seem to get it right. The first spelling aways seems a little rude at first. The second one reminds me of the International Crepes at IHOP. Yummy!
I'm very tired, rambling now, must. get. to. bed.
I found a website that straightened the crape, crepe name for me. The trees as a group are called crape. The Natchez group of crapes are called crepe. I hadn't paid much attention to the spelling before.

HAAA! Maggiemoo I just looked at the watchdog one last time before I ordered a few minis for my MIL look it over can you believe this - I wish it was so much better

Hmm, glad I haven't ordered from them. Htop must have had a better experience with them. This is a good reminder to us all to use the Garden Watchdog!
maybe htop will stop by and tell us a little more about her time with them - she might know how to order and not get burned - Mitch
I'll try to remember to ask her tomorrow in San Antonio.
I did not order my mini crepe myrtle from this place. I am sorry that I posted a link to the website. I can't remember for sure where I bought it, but I think I got it from Rainbow Gardens Nursery here in San Antonio.
that is great news seeing that I will be going down there in July... maybe they will still have some....
Mitch, they had some today at the Rainbow Nursery on Bandera Road. I'll check to see if they have any at the one that is closer to I35.
If not Bandera Road here I come! Thanks for looking Htop - Mitch
You are quite welcome.
Hazel, I saw that someone bought one of these at Rainbow yesterday (Kip maybe?) I was just about to post that here, boy, you're fast! :-)
Maggie, I think Susie bought one just like the one I have. I wasn't sure because it (and mine) are not in bloom yet. I was up bright and early today and just had to peruse what was happening at DG before I started my yardwork.
