Lace Leaf Hardy Hibiscus?

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

I have a hardy hibiscus, dinnerplate, and this is its second year. Last year something ate the leaves until they looked like lace. The same thing is happening this year. Anyone care to explain to me what I have and what needs to be done about it? I gratefully appreciate your responses.

Japanese beetles always get mine, but it is early for them.

Whatever it is, you can't see it, and it's doing the same thing to my hollyhocks... Can anyone help? Thanks!

Look real close for tiny worm/catapillars on the leaves. They turn into hibiscus saw flies.

What does the Japanese beetles look like? Are they like a lady bug but red?

Lucky you if you don't know what the Japanese beetle looks like!

I was just holding my sandwich and starting to take a bite. Yuck.

Hey! Thanks for the yucky info... It's exactly what I needed :)

I can't see anything on the leaves, but I believe it's there. And I have millions of grubs, moles, and voles... I guess I'm just going to have to get some chemicals instead of 'natural' stuff to eradicate everything. I have to be careful so my puppy doesn't get sick... Yuck! This is not easy, is it.

Are these the same as the little worms that drill up the main stem and kill the plant..... Is there a good solution for getting rid of those ...... By the time I realize there's a worm burrowed in my plant stem is already wilted on its way to dead...... : - (

My plant has big leaves that look like lace because everything between the veins has been eaten...
