This pod set back in Nov. This is the only brug that lived in my "greenhouse" over the winter because of the pod. Think it will be ready to pick soon? At the Florala swap, tiG, I *think* said the stem would start to turn yellow and the tip would get soft when ready...stem is still green and the whole pod is still firm. It's in the process of blooming now...I really want to put it in a larger pot,but should I wait until the pod has been picked? After watching and waiting,I don't want to do the wrong thing. TIA
Still hangin' in there
It doesn't look ready, coming from a person that has never seen a pod, I only say that because it looks green, I assumed they changed colors, but don't know...
Ginger, In my opinion it will be fine to go ahead and repot your brug. I had a pod on my Creamsickle that was on the plant from last August until the other day. The pod seemed to not see any ill effects from me potting mine back up. (I use a drilled bucket in a large pot method).
The only thing is, that when a pod stays on the plant for a long time there is the possability of the seeds beginning to germinate while still in the pod. This is what happed to me. I had planned on sharing the seeds, but because they were already germinating I had to go ahead and plant the whole pod, apx. 120 seeds!! Like I needed more seedlings to take care of this summer.
Not the best of pictures, but here is a pic of one of the seeds that had germinated inside the pod.
Wow...I had no idea that the seeds would germinate while still in the pod!
Went to home depot today. They had 18gal. rope handle buckets on sale for $3.98....came home with 6. Hopefully a jump from 5gal. into 18 won't be too much of a change. Bill is already starting to grumble so I know he won't be happy helping me move from 5 to 10 and then 18.
bumping this up. The pod has been doing it's thing for 6mos. Thinking I might go ahead had pick it. Should I let it dry some before opening it? and what is the best way to open it? Last year was the first time I ever had a brug so this is all new to me.
I have no idea which brug this is, but I call it Pooh because I planted a cutting on my dog Pooh's grave. He was a 3 legged fawn colored Greyhound. The color is melon and the scent reminds me of lily with citrus.
I have 2 pods on Susanne that have been there since last year, 11/18. I keep looking at them! They are green and so firm still so I keep waiting.
If you are sick of waiting, take a clean sharp blade and cut a little window in the pod. And see if the seeds are brownish. If white, do not pick yet!! I learned this trick from Susie. And then she uses crazy glue to put the piece back. LOL. I have left the wound open myself but I am careful not to get it wet after. We have no rain here, so it does not get wet inside and rot.
When you go to pick it, just break it open with your fingers. I take the seeds out and put in a colander. I wash them well getting all the pod stuff off. Then I take them and dry in a paper towel. Then I transfer them to a dry paper towel and put under lights. You want them to dry in about 24 to 36 hours. They will mold if you let them stay wet too long.
GOOD LUCK!!! And your brug sounds delightful!!
Here is one of my old pods.
Thanks kell. Rain here for a few days so no window making right now. what to do..what to do. maybe wait a bit longer. grrrrr
Now that you mention it, I may make a window on mine too. LOL. They are Susanne X RK. I can't wait to get them started. Patience is not a virtue here. LOL
