Digging tulip and daff bulbs

Tampico, IL

Hi all,
I'm a newbe to this group but already have found a wealth of info. Can someone tell me when I can move my tulip and daff bulbs? Was ill last fall so just stuck them in the ground............but now I need to move them to a new home.
Thanks,

I usually recommend that you do it after flowering. Cut the spent flower heads off but leave the green foliage. Daffodils are easier to move with green foliage because you can actually use the leaves as "handles".

With the help of a shovel or fork to lift the soil below the bulbs and you can then just pull the daffs out and replant them with the green foliage sticking out (do not remove). water well to settle soil and fertilize again.

Tulip stems break a lot easier and those I like to wait until the foliage has died back naturally (turned yellow and withered). Just as the foliage is turning brown, I dig and be guided by the foliage where the bulbs are. Then I break off the dead/withered foliage and replant the tulips.

You CAN move tulips with green foliage if you are carefull. Then replant at same dept and make sure you water well (long/deep) to settle soil around roots.

Good luck

Thanks for the info! I was wondering if I could plant them in a planter or some flower pots until fall.
I have bedding plants where I want to move them . And I want to put more plants where the bulbs are now. Gees...........never enough room for everything. LOL
Thanks,

You're right about never enough room. Our rear "lawn" has become a nice wide grassy path.
