Plum Granny or Queen Anne's Pocket

Louisville, KY

Someone sent me a few seed of the Plum Granny and I have germinated them. Anyone ever grow these here. This is a description of it:
Plum Granny or Queen Anne's Pocket
75 days. Beautiful, ornamental fruit are yellow with deep orange stripes, and only 2”-3" long! They are grown for their wonderful fragrance! These melons were very popular in Victorian gardens, and have been our most requested melon. Bland flavor."

These were often used in the days when folks did not bathe regularly. People carried them in their pockets to cover body odor.

yes i am growing them this year. my granny used to grow them and she called them "pomegranates" her version of plum granny i suppose. she brought the seeds from kentucky and grew them in michigan for a while. i got my seeds from seed saver's exchange. can't wait to smell that fragrance again. it will bring back childhood memories. by the way when do i know they are ripe and how do i save the seeds for next year?

I grew them a couple years ago, by accident! Horseshoe sent me a seedling labeled as a lemon cuke. As it grew and the fruit began to appear, I thought, "Hmmmmm, these look like tiny watermelons..." They got even more melonish, so I wrote and told Shoe. Oops! Someone else, somewhere, was probably growing cukes, thinking they were pocket melons! ;) We had a good laugh over that.

gardenwife, that is too funny! :) By the way, here is a pic of two melons that are growing from the same pack of seeds that I planted. I think seed saver's sent me a surprise seed as well. Does anyone know what the one without the stripes would be? Looks like a melon but I wonder what kind.
