Made in the Shade

My first shot at coaxing some common plants in our area (7b) for a container with very little sun.

Hi Raleigh Man. I love the coleus in that mix! Do you know the name of it. The whole thing looks beautiful. You are in a great area for finding great plants. I love Logans Trading Company downtown. They have it all!

I agree, the coleus adds a lot. I do not know the name of it however. I end up at Logan’s about every Saturday morning just to see what’s there as it’s only a mile or so from my house. These plants actually came from the state Farmers’ Market. They have lots of vendors and one that specializes in coleus. I just picked out the Sweet Flag and went around to match it with a red & yellow coleus.

I am jealous! I would love to be able to easily go the the state Farmers Market! I especially like Coleus. There is a very nice lady in Lakeview, SC that grows all kinds of cool varieties. I bought a bunch from her last week. They were a little tall so I trimmed them down and put the trimmings in water to root. If they root I will send you some. Most are the new HUGE varieties. That is great for me though because I have lots of garden to fill up.

Robin, it sounds like you have your work cut for you! I am still learning about Coleus, but it makes for a great variety and you don't have to worry about the blooming season ending. I could use some coaching on them...is putting a cutting in water all that's needed to propagate them?

Yea. That is one of the great things about Coleus. They root real easy. You can just stick them in water or you can even stick a little piece in moist soil and it roots quick. I just checked the ones I got last week and they already have little roots. Thats my kind of plant....easy! Have you ever seen the new huge varieties. They grow up to be about 3 feet tall and have great color. A nice way to cheer up a shady spot. They actually can also even take some sun.

I have seen a number of the larger varieties around. I am just looking for a place to plop one.
