passiflora aurantia

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Here is a passionvine that I was amazed to find at Lowe's a few weeks ago. This is an Australian species. It seems to be able to tolerate the heat and humidity so far. The flowers stay opened for at least 3 days and turn darker as they age.

WOW What a find. It blows me away at the variety Lowe's can offer sometimes, I wish they were more consistant. How much did you pay for that beauty? It seems that every time I find the passion flowers at lowes, there all picked over and the labels are all wrong. The last 3 I bought from hem were in sad shape and I thought for sure I could bring them around. I lost all 3 sadly. I can get every other passie to thrive but I've killed every coccinea and vitafolia I've touched but they were very sad when I got them. I'll get them someday!

I paid $20 for a gal pot--well grown plant. But the tag said only passiflora with a generic picture of incense. Fortunately, I do know enough about pv to recognize what I saw. However, I wish stores would NOT stock plants that can't possibly survive in the zone where they are sold. My Jelly joker is struggling in the 90* weather we are having. I will have to repot it and grow it in a cooler location. Not what I had planned at all.

OH
don't say that
If it weren't for them stocking plants that were in the wrong zone I'd never get a passi up here

Well, crested--you do have a point. So they should have the correct growing instructions on every plant. Passiflora grow in many different settings. Heat and humidity does kill many of them.

Here are the buds. They start out pale and darken as they mature.

Flicker I bought one of those also. Mine is right out in the open yard in full sun planted in a 15 gallon pot and it is growing like a weed and hasnt stopped blooming since I got it.

I was tempted to buy one of each of the other 3 varieties they had but at $20 a pop I decided to leave them. I examined the leaves on all they had and determined that there was only 4 varieties but as you said all of the lables only said passiflora.

I got mine about 2 weeks ago and I went to Lowes yesterday for something and they still have these in stock.

I wanna know where the heck Lowes is getting these from? They obviously are some of the harder to get varieties and seem to be in more than just one state. Hmmmm, Is there a Lowes in San Diego??? lol

Great find Flicker!

Google Lowe's Home and Garden Center and find the nearest store. Aurantia and Jelly Joker are both hating the intense 90* heat we have everyday. I am afraid to mail plants in this early scizzler. I think I will dig these vines and keep them in a cooler spot... (In Louisiana we have to build summer greenhouses with airconditioners for plants not tough enough to take it.)
There were only 3 varieties at our store. The other was a caerulea...maybe Clear Sky.
Lowe's shudda TOLD me this would happen.

I noticed on the tags that it said product of Canada but no nursery name or anything like that.

Flicker there may have only been 3 varieties in the store. I kind of moved some of the plants apart and observed the leaves and it appereaed to be 4 but I have to admit, I have been wrong before!!

Weird if it came from Canada...lol!
