My yarrow suddenly looks horrible

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

It's been huge and green until it started blooming. It's turning brown underneath and just looking crummy, but blooming profusely. Does it do that when it blooms? Is it getting too much water? too little water? just hot?

I just looked at a picture from the 15th and it looked fine then....?

Mine have gone throught this stage before too. Unfortunately, I never figured out why. Maybe someone else knows.

Paige, I think it is mormal for the lower leaves of yarrow to die out as it grows and gets taller. Mine does that every year, but I only have the wild type, I don't have experience with the hybrids.

I was thinking about this last night too. It has to have something to do with the blooming. I bet if I were to cut off the blooms before they got big, the plant would stay green. It must be just diverting all it's energy. I think I remember it doing that last year too. I need to look thru some pictures.

I was told that Lamb's Ear starts looking really bad if you let it bloom. I'm letting mine bloom tho because I like the blooms. This is my first year for it tho, so I might not next year, depending on how it starts to look.

This is one of them. I think it's "Paprika".

Girl it looks lovely! Don't worry about it and enjoy the blooms, and if the lower leaves bother you, just remove them. And remember that nothing is perfect.

This is when it looked better. If I can remember I'll go take a pic of it now.

Well, tonight I found the answer to my question, and it's NOT good! It's black aphids!! GGGRRR! The plant has only looked bad for a few days, but they've probably been there a few weeks. I had no idea that yarrow got aphids! I've had these black ones on my Autumn Joy sedums in the early spring. I throughly sprayed both plants with insecticidal soap.

Eeeeeeew, I had those on a bracycome. The ladybugs found them and ate them all.

I have ladybugs, but apparently not enough. I also discovered that I have mealy bugs on zinnias and spider mites on my milkweed!!! I have never had these bugs before!! I was reading that a special ladybug eats mealy bugs, so I might have to go buy me some. I think I'm going to have to start a whole thread about my new bug problem. :(

I need some of those mealy-bug eating bugs. Those are the bane of my garden, I think they're all gone and they pop up somewhere else!
I had a few spidermites earlier and found that when I water, if I spray water on the undersides of the leaves the mites don't stick around.

I guess this is what happens when we have no winter. :(

Well, we had a teeny winter, lol. I think it's the heat with no rain that we're having. It was hot again today.

Yes, that is sooo true. Don't spider mites thrive on the dry heat? I'm going to have to turn on my sprinklers to keep everything misted if that's the case.
