Hi there. I have a couple small brugs and one beautiful, flowering plant about 6 feet tall. It is in a pot, but the roots have grown through into the ground. I am about to move from Los Angeles (the "valley") to Phoenix. Is Phoenix too hot for brugs? Should I just leave my brug behind? My plant does well in our hot summers (100's) and recovered from frost once last winter. But Phoenix gets a bit hotter for longer than here in LA.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!
Moving my brugs out of state
I live in FL and it gets pretty warm. If it was me I would take it.
I would too.. And I think you can just cut off the roots where they leave the pot and your brug will be ok but someone should confirm that :)
You may want to cut back the top some if you cut the roots. Especially if it is hot. It depends on how much the plant depended on the roots you are cutting off to feed the canopy. Ideally, you would do this a while before your move so your plant can get used to the shock of the cutting the roots before you put it under such stress as moving it so far to another climate. I would definitely cut off some of the top to reduce the feeding needs of the plant while it acclimates to all the changes. Or you can take cuttings with you!
Good luck in your move and I hope you enjoy your new home!
Thanks for your replies! I would hate to leave this plant behind. I am just concerned about the climate.... well over 100 degrees pretty much every day now until fall in a desert climate (dry heat and no rain). I am wondering if it would do better in a partial shady spot as opposed to full sun.
The plant will remain in the pot (we're renting until about December) until we move into our new house (it's being built). Then it can stretch out its roots again. :)
You'll probably have to give it more water in Phoenix, but I've seen Brugs there that looked healthy. They weren't in full sun though.

Gee, I am more worried about you than your brug!! Bring lots of sunscreen and moisturizer!!
LOL kell! We have lots of sun screen!! :)
Thanks everyone for your replies! Looks like I will be bringing my brugs with me!! :) :) :)
QTPlinLA,
Before you hack your Brugmansia to pieces, find out if Arizona has a quarantine on Brugmansias. When we moved from San Jose to La Grange, I found that the plants I planned to bring with me were allowed. I just needed a certification of health from our local extension agent. Your extension country agent should know what restrictions Arizona has. Call.
When I brought plants from TN to TX I had to treat the soil for grub worms and have a certificate from the Ag dept, but no one even asked me for it. Arizona has an inspection station at the border.
MaVie has experience with high desert. Maybe she will answer. Don't know if she gets that heat. Strong winds.

You know I really cannot believe all the state regulations, most states ship plants all over, I guess that are just more particular when the plants are going to reside in their state. When we used to go over the MS river bridge, the MS side checks our vehicles for boll weevils. That stopped some time back after maybe it was learned that chemicals did a better job than inspecting autos...
