I just received some brug seeds in a trade and was wondering if someone advise me on planting them. I've got a couple growing from cuttings but haven't tried growing from seed. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Got Brug seeds . . . What now?
Alright this is what I did and it worked - soak 24 in H2O2 water solution. Fold in a coffee filter, place in ziplock bag, and tape to window for 3 or 4 days. Take out of bag and peel off the hard outer shell plant in a warm place in moist soil. They all came up in 5 to 7 days in the dirt. Good luck - Mitch
Wow Mitch, I have never heard of doing it that. So are they wet in the coffee filter? What does doing that do if you take them out to peel?
My first year doing them I would peel them then put in damp paper towels in a plastic bag. They would germinate in the plastic bag and then I would plant them up.
I didn't have such great germination rate as you did, Mitch. You can't argue with success. LOL
Now I use rockwool, but I know some here use dirt. In using either, I would place the peeled seeds on top of the rockwool, slightly pressed in but where you can see the tops. Then I bag them in clear plastic, seal the bag and place under lights. I do not use bottom heat and I only soak the seeds if they are old. I know some here do not even peel their seeds, I prefer to. I get great germination.
Let us know how you do, jjayroe. They grow so fast they are fun to watch.
Interesting, Mitch, I'm going to try that, but I'll have to buy coffee filters, we drink tea...thanks!!!
I was just about to ask this question, thanks jjayroe, I'll sit back and watch.
I've seen:
soak in clorox over night
soak in h202 (hydrogen peroxide ?%)
soak in h202/water solution (what percentage of each)
and soak in water over night
Any pros and cons from the ones who have tried these different methods? Also would there be any difference with datura seeds?
Then what methods do you all use after soaking? Help out a newbie or two here with some tips and tricks please.
Buns
Thanks for the advice! I don't drink coffee either so I'll have to go buy some filters. Mitch, what is the ratio of the h2o2 water solution? I'm pretty new to Dave's Garden and I'm just thrilled to have all these gardening folks to be able to pick their brains for answers to my questions. This is just great!
