Broken banana help?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I'm hoping it's not a lost cause. Last night we had a thunder and lightning storm with torrential downpours. My musa basjoo got broken in half. The pseudostem which was about 5ft bent in half so that the top part of the plant was lying on the ground. Will staking help? Should I cut it off? Will it come back from the pseudostem? Help!

When they move banana plants down here, they cut the pseudostem in half, they grow more leaves but are shorter. Bananas have their growth point in the tuber/rhisome thingie that is in the ground, not at the top like a lot of other plants.

Sounds like you are in luck, Liz!!

Thank you! The thing is looking so sad. When I cut it back does it recover quickly?

Liz I had the same thing happen on my Zebrina.Except it broke it off at the dirt. I am hoping it will put out another pup. Sounds like yours has a good chance.

Just cut the bend off and it will sprout new leave.. I have done many times after hurricanes or bad storms.

Liz, they grow fast especially if it's warm and you give them plenty of fertilize and water.
Peggy, your Zebrina should send up a new leaf, Bleu stepped on my Goldfinger and broke it off at soil level, it's about a foot tall now, has three new leaves!!(he really did step on it, he was chasing a bug)

Thanks Susie, Mini and Mystic. I covered my eyes and lopped it off. Now all I need if for the heat to return.

Oooooo I hope she'll be OK for you Liz.

You really got me thinking now, 'cause I just planted all 6 of my 'nanas in the ground yesterday .

If and when we get winds I think that mine will just blow over since they are planted in sandy soil.

Good Luck
