That's too bad, Linda. Gosh, I hope that slugs never get started here. Butterfly is one of my favorites. Can't wait for blooms here. Any blooms will be welcome.

Beautiful blossoms Linda...so sorry about the darn slugs! I am having so many of them this year also. I just came in from sprinkling salt on them...it was still cool out and they were just hanging out on the leaves and didn't even see me coming with it. They were fried!
Brugie...yes, consider yourself very fortunate! They are yucky!!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Even with the slug damage I think it looks wonderful! I just got done "planting" torn up soda cans around all my hostas and brugs.. LOL I hope it works!

Shelly, do you put something in them to attract? Like beer? Is this the new look for the taverns? LOL

What a great pink you are getting. It is such a pretty brug.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

I will have to try the alum. can strips...I had forgotten about it!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

lol Jnette! nothing in them, I just put pieces burried around my plants (sharp edges up), and it cuts their body when they try to get to the plants.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I've never tried that. Can you give a little more information? How do you cut the cans in strips.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Beautiful blooms Linda. I love the scent of Butterfly too. It reminds me of baby powder.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

It has rained all day here today. I want to get back out there again. Picture made this morning was with me carrying an umbrella. Not many plants I would go out in the rain to photograph.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I used a stanley knife to start cutting at the top of the can, and just cut around in a cirlce with scissors. I was then cut the circles in half, and burried them around the plants with the edges sticking up. On the hosta, I used 2 of the "circles", to make a larger ring around the base, so the can wouldnt cut the stems or leaves. I will go out in a bit to get a picture.
Others may have done it differently tho.

Linda, your Butterfly is wonderful, even with the slugs!!! Aren't they just awful, I hate slugs. I had slugs out the kazoo last season, nothing seemed to stop them. This year I used 1) Safer (brand) pellets that turn gooey after they are wet and sorta make a crust on the dirt, this product is not harmful to animals, 2) a charcoal grey liquid, Eliminator or Eliminate, which is not supposed to touch the foliage and should be applied away from the plant and 3) Diatomaceous Earth. Thus far, I do not have slugs. But, I wonder if it's just the dry spring, rain in two or three week intervals. I went to three nurseries that are troubled by slugs/snails and all three use Diatomaceous Earth. I have a powder sprayer that I like but I don't have a clue how I'm supposed to get the powder in the sprayer. Is there a trick that any of you might know to get the stuff in the sprayer??? TIA!!!

Shelly....use DE...it's so much easier!

Linda, your Butterfly is beautiful, even with the slug bites in it. The color is so pretty!

Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

Brinda I was thinking DE too!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I have too many children, dogs, cats to do the aluminum strips, and I wear flip flops, so my feet are exposed too, the DE is quick and easy and appears to work...it rained shortly after I put it out, so I'll be doing it again when it dries up some...just to make sure I get them...after we have wind, rain, it's so difficult to tell if the damage is weather or bugs, because lots of times I don't see any bugs, so this year, I try to keep at it with something and I'm up to the Bayer Tree and Shrub and if that doesn't do it, I'm going to use Raid...

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I thought that rain didn't ruin the DE. Just washes it into the ground where the slimy critters will still come into contact with it. I was told you could mix it with water and spray it, but I don't know for sure if it works wet.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Yep, that is correct Brugie, supposed to not be bothered by rain; however, we had a deluge and I'm not willing to take any chances with slugs or cats this season, they nearly did my whole garden in last year.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Sherry, I had snails, slugs and cats like crazy last year and it looks like they're back this year also plus a tiny green worm that's eating my leaves.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Use copper. Snails and slugs won't cross over the copper. The copper causes a reaction similar to an electrical shock. Some hardware stores sell copper strips in rolls. Cut a length long enough to go around the trunk of the plant or around the rim of the pot. No sharp edges to step on. No damage to pets. Copper is a little expensive, but the strips work for 7 years before corrosion stops the reaction.

I think you can just sprinkle the DE around the base of the plant using a shaker

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Betty, I've used the copper wrapped around the trunk. Problem is the slug climbs up a neighboring plant and moves over anywhere they touch. Who knew that slugs were smart???? I saw slime up the stake that was attached to one.

I tried the 1:9 ammonia/water spray, and it kills them on contact. Problem with that is you have to see them in action (usually at night).

Wonder what would happen if I mixed enough ammonia/water and sprayed the ground. Would it kill the ones waiting for nightfall?

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

I used the copper wrap on a raised bed and it worked for years until the copper corroided.
My friend used the copper edging on a veggie bed near the house. The snails climbed up the wall of the house and got into the bed. I would say "yes" they are very smart indeed!
Now, I go out early and shake alittle salt on them...again though you have to actually see them for it to work.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Ok, pals, I have a huge coil of copper wire that belonged to my daddy. I'm going to try it and hope for the best, thanks for the tip!! I'm not believing they are smart. But, I have slugs, not snails...
