my first Iochroma

Knoxville, TN

I placed my first order with Plant Safari. I have wanted to try a couple Ichroma. I could not have been more pleased with the quality of the plant material! These arrived blooming! Should I treat them the same way I treat their Brugmansia sisters?

These are just beautiful...first time I have heard/seen them! Please, tell me more about Plant Safari.....would love to get a few of these. Sorry I can't help you with caring for them. Regards, carole from atlanta

You can find them at www.plantsafari.com. The prices are SUPER reasonable and I was very pleased with the service. They are just getting starded in mail order and not set up to take CC information on line. They called for the CC #, gave me a ship date and the plants arrived as promised.

Wow Mel, those look nice. In TN I grew the Iochromas in pots, some afternoon shade, don't keep them soggy but don't let them dry out to the point of wilting. I used Miracle Grow or Peter's when I would think of it, lol, but they did better with some fertilize. The acnistus was hardy there but I was never brave enough to leave the iochromas out all winter.

thanks for the info Mel and Cala! I think I'm on my way to spending more $$...lol!

Thanks Suz! The label says hardy to 20 degrees. I don't think I will risk it. It is so neat to get a plant that is blooming when it is that small. I also bet the hummingbirds will love it!
You know I have PLENTY of room to overwinter it inside. LOL!

Mel, I know Paul will be happy to move his bass boat outside so you will have plenty of room!

Right Suz, if he had to choose between ME and the Ranger Boat, guess whose plants would be homeless? I am not even allowed to set a plant down on that boat! Actually, I am thankful he is as obsessive about his hobby as I am about mine. Otherwise, we would have never reached a mutual understanding.

Mel, those look so nice. I grew 3 colors a few years ago. They grow quite large. Trees. My problem with them was they are so floppy, they needed constant pruning to try to keep them in line. I finally took them out. Susie, they did great here over winter outside.

Have you seen what the red one goes for on ebay? It is a sin. LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Yeah, I saw that Kell. I'm hoping my red one is still alive. I saw the purple one blooming, had to spray for bugs. Every bug in the garden likes this plant!

I have been looking here for a iochroma for at least the past year. The web site you posted is wonderful, too bad there's this thing called a border between us....

Meltn, they look great. I also order from Plant Safari and was so happy with the plants I received, I ordered from the again. LOL

I agree with what Kell says. They get huge. I have one planted in the ground also, and I cut it back severely last year, and I've had to prune it already. The flowers are lovely, but it seems to be attracting quite a few whiteflies, which isn't good, especially this soon in the spring.

Oh no, don't say whiteflies. Knock on wood, but, I have not seen a one this year. Thanks for the insect warnings! I will start using Bayer tree and shrub drench IMMEDIATELY.
Thanks for the picture, Clare! I love the color!
Ada, I am already working on a list for my next order. Jeff wrote and told me they will have some new things in soon. I told him to keep my CC# on file. They really seem like nice guys!!
