Violabird, your flower doesn't look like the skinneriana species and actually looks like the figo species. It should be moved here: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1187/index.html Maybe Mystic can move this? My M. skinneriana is blooming again now in December! This skinneriana is actually an improved version of M. figo. I just went out to take a picture of it.

The flowers are very white compared to Michelia figo, and they last a few days. This shrub/tree also has a longer blooming period.

Hi Clare,

I'm hoping you can clarify something that's been gnawing at me for a long, long time: does m. skinneriana have a different scent from m. figo? I often find m. figo described as "port wine magnolia" and m. skinneriana as the "improved banana shrub," which I believe is a comparison to m. figo (the banana shrub part). But how can the same plant be described as port wine and bananas??

Are m. skinneriana's leaves bigger than m. figo?
