Cocoche Loco, Nopal Crinado, Nopal de Crines (Opuntia pilifera)
This not an image of Opuntia phaeacantha. It is instead an image of O. streptacantha
palmbob, are you okay with the proposed alternate ID? Please let me know and I can move the image if you agree.
In light of new knowledge, since 9 months ago....
I am pretty sure it's Opuntia pilifera instead.
There was one growing at my local botanical garden.
It also looks just like the images in my book and on the net.
Personally, I would defer to Xenomorph in every situation where there is a cactus identification controversy.
Thanks! I moved the one image to O. pilifera here: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/85697/index.html
Palmbob, you had other images on the original entry; were they of this same plant, or were they taken of another plant, and should remain on the entry for Opuntia phaeacantha: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/63698/index.html
those of other plants, one of which is in a different garden... all labeled as O phaeacantha. Whether any or all are REALLY O phaeacantha, I am not going to argue either way.
Well, I'm leaving them where they are, until someone tells me otherwise ;o)
