Despite the horrible weather we have been having this past 2 weeks (more horrible than usual!) I am surprised so much is in bloom. Still no leaves on the trees although the buds are ready to burst at the next warm day (sometime in July!). Here's a sample of whats blooming in my garden. I'm sure these were in bloom weeks, if not months ago, elsewhere in the country. Well, better late than never I guess. This is my February Daphne on my front lawn.
Newfoundland blooms May 18
Todd, your Daphne is wonderful! I wish I could get mine to bloom like that.
Darius; I didn't know you lingered in the Canadian group! Maybe the Daphne needs cooler temps than you get in NC.
Todd, is that the daphne with the wonderful smell ? I love the colour variation on the pulmonaria.
Todd, I usually don't read this forum, but I am occasionally motivated to see what you cold weather gardeners are doing!
Todd, the photos of your blossoms are wonderful, thanks for sharing. Buck up, the weather can't stay cold forever. Maybe since you've had such an unusually nasty winter and cool spring, your summer will be heavenly. Think positively! :D
Darius, nice of you to come visit. You are always welcome to come and chat and share photos of your own. Please do. Out west we have been blooming for quite a few weeks. Trees have nearly finished all the spring blossoming. We are all ready for summer!!
Beautiful flowers Todd!!! Ü Having those beauties bloom does make up for your extended winter weather. ;)
Well today is the nastiest yet; very thick fog and pelting rain and only 5 C. Tomorrow is not suppose to be much better, but Weathernow is saying the sun will break by Sunday with temps reaching a soaring 10 C! We would need sun and 25 C everyday for 3 months to make up for this past winter (and that's NOT going to happen)....strangely, by August we do catch up bloom-wise with the rest of Canada...it means we have a riot of blooms for July.....and I get to enjoy Tulips in June (the record late blooming for me is July 2!) LOL!
I love your pulmonaria Todd, and I've never seen double bloodroot before - what a beauty! Thanks for sharing. --Ginny
Todd I'd never seen a double bloodroot before either, what a beautiful flower. Too bad you've had such horrendous weather, I do hope you have a glorious and longer than usual summer. I spent 2 weeks the last week of July and first week of Aug in '97. I had wonderful weather, and a great trip. I really enjoyed Nfld.

The double bloodroot is a keeper for sure and rather pricy I gather. It is sterile so can only be propagated by divisions. I think the going price is $25 per plant! I paid $10 about 15 years ago and thought I was mad. Now they have spread all over the place, just as fast as the single form. If they grow that fast, I don't understand why nurseries still charge so much.
Today's May the 20th already! Where did it go?????????? E
Todd, I have a couple of double sanguinaria, and a single. Do you find the double much more vigourous? Unusual for that but my single is wimpy, and some of th Alpine peeps have concurred. Yes, darius, we spell funny here in the frozen north, too! I actually just saw some small S. canadensis flore plena for $7. Which is excellent-- alas I paid more like your prices. In the wet coast, of course, these are long gone now and Elaine's roses are blooming.
Sunrize, I don't see much difference between the two bloodroots....both seem to do equally well here. The single does self-seed a little which the double does not of course. Roses! Ours are just barely starting to leaf...no roses here until mid-July.
Perhaps I should see if moving my single nearer the doubles would help, although I'm not sure they would appreciate it. thanks, Todd. Lovely pictures for us all to enjoy.
Lovely pictures Todd. I particularly like the double sanguinaria. A friend gave me a couple of pieces a few years ago. It took a while to find a place that it seems to like. I'm hoping it will start to spread a bit. I love the leaves on the Primula marginata. I've never seen a primula like that.
Todd you must be sp happy to see some garden colour after such a rough winter and spring. I bet your yard brightens up the whole block.
Love those Primulas. Striking!
Great pictures of your plants Todd.
Wilma
Great photos, Todd. Thanks especially for the peach-coloured Viola odorata; I'd never seen one either.
Shannon
Thank you for brightening up my world today Todd.....I'm at work again and everything looks grey. It's pouring cats and dogs here!
Beautiful pictures, Todd. Luv the peach colored viola.
:) Donna
so we got this rain from you did we pam???
Don't know where it headed off to (we were just glad it blew itself OUTTA HERE) but you have to admit getting rain is much better than what you usually send my direction Lynn! ;)
You bet! Actually I was thinking it had been a week since our last 2 inch pour and that I might have to start watering. Love it when the good Lord and Saskatchewan do it for us. It hasn't been super cold with the rain either the way it has been the last few springs. This is a gardeners spring so far.
