20 Mil HDPE Polyethylene Pond Liner
20 mils is half as thick as they recommend here, I know some places sell the 20 mil liners, but I would not use them for a large pond. I did use a 20 mil liner for a bog area less than 5 feet across and it will not be walked on or go thru the other trauma that a pond is subject to. The pond place here sells a 45 mil liner for ponds and thats what they recommend. Others may have a different opinion... thats my 2 cents worth. .... (silverfluter's DH.. Tom)
OOPS... I just noticed "polyethelene" or HDPE. I have no experience with that material other than what I have read and it is mentioned as the least desirable of usable materials. The local pond place only sells rubber based liners... there must be a reason... Tom

45 mil EPDM rubber is the industry standard for decorative pond liner, good in cold weather, resistant to UV decay, very strong stuff. We spliced together an existing 5 year old EPDM liner to an expansion section last summer.....worked like a charm and no leaks or decay in the original liner after 6 years in a 10a gardening zone.

Tom,
Can you tell me where you read about this type of liner ? I would like to read some about it, I cant find any reviews.
Thanks
We bought some books on pond construction, thats the only place I have seen any information on it. Outside of that, I just figure that rubber will outlast HDPE any day. The folks at the pond place won't even sell it... the only time I would even consider it is if there was a situation where you needed a temporary pond of some type for a few years and needed to save money on it. Thats about all I can tell you... good luck... Tom
I usually order my liners from either pondliner.com or azponds.com but here is some basic info:

Hi Lisa,
I used the 45 mil epdm for my main pond and I am glad I did. I bought the 20 mil liner at Lowes for my stream and waterfall and while I think it will be fine for that application, I believe I made a good decision about the liner for the main pond. The epdm is actually more flexible and has more 'give' to it than the other. Also, I dropped my screwdriver on the liner for the waterfall, and it almost went through. It made a decided dent in the liner and I'm lucky it didn't puncture it.
I bought my liner from pondliner.com and found their prices to be very good, even with shipping. They also have good customer service and spent a lot of time with me on the phone going over all the choices for pumps, etc. I agonized over the liner decision due to the cost. People on this forum by and large recommended the epdm liner. One thing I did learn was that most of the formulas for measuring your liner will give you lots of extra liner, which you might or might not need. I took the actual measurements of my irregularly shaped pond by running a measuring tape down the side, across the shelf, along the bottom, then up the other side. I did this in 5 different places going each way and then took the largest measurement for each side. I ended up saving about 200$ on the liner by doing the actual measurement of the pond rather than using a formula. I still had plenty of liner, plus some left over.
