Costus barbatus

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

This ginger took two years to bloom, I guess it is worth the wait. Someone told me that this flower will last the whole summer. And it will keep getting bigger.

The flowers coming out of the bracts are edible...they taste great in salads. I was told the flowers of all the Costus (Costi?) are edible...and some taste like raspberry, some like Granny Smith apples....Just watch out for bugs in them!!! LOL Earwigs taste yucky.
