I cut the foliage on iris that had already bloomed. I cut them to the ground. Will they come back?? Thanks!!!
Iris question
I usually cut back my irises, but not until it is time to put them to bed for winter. If we get some more nice weather before the freeze, they generally start growing again. So I would say you have to wait and see, but they will probably be okay. Usually that is the time to divide them if you need to... and you cut back the foliage then, too.
Also, there are more and more rebloomer iris introduced each year. Many of these are popular cultivars and will rebloom in late summer. With any plant it is best to either.....
1) trim foliage back in fall before winter for tidiness
2) let foliage stay through winter to provide habitat and possibly food source for wildlife and landscape
interest, or
3) wait until the foliage dies back naturally before trimming up appearance to provide the bulb/rhizome/roots energy to grow in size. This is especially critical for bulbous plants.
