A good ending to a sad scenario

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I had my dog up to the Vet's office last Wednesday.
While I was there a dog was brought in that looked pretty big.
When he was on the scale I remarked that he looked bigger than what the scale said. Then the Tech mouthed to me that the dog was there to be euthanized. I immediately teared up. I know I couldn't work there. I stayed a while since they weren't busy and after a while the dog shot up and realised that her "family" wasn't around. If she knew why she was there she wouldn't give them a second thought.
Without getting into too much detail, the dog was an older dog and the owner had left it to be euthanized because she couldn't deal with its medical problem any longer.
The people who work there were a bit suspicious of the reason for having the dog put down and decided to wait it out and see if it actually displayed any signs of the so called problem.
I worried about her since I was up there. I checked this morning about her and they said she went home with one of the staff. She did really well and even went canoeing. She is totally housebroken and very well behaved.
I can't understand why people give their pets up like that with no remorse for what the dog is going through. How sad to think that just because it became an inconvenience the owners opted to just get rid of it in such a drastic way.
I am so happy to hear she is alive and well and that the staff there are so compassionate.
