Just planted a Wooly Tree Fern (Dicksonia antarctica). I was advised that this would be the best tree fern for my area of the world (San Antonio Texas). Anything I should know (growing tips ect.).
Thanks, George in San Antonio
just planted my first Tree Fern (Dicksonia antarctica)
George,
Dicksonia antarctica's hardiness depends on where it was grown. Supposedly, it is hardy and evergreen in temperatures 20º - 25ºF and above. Can be killed by temperatures below 19º, but if you give it some protection it will probably survive our winters. I have one in a pot and think I'll keep it there. It goes in the greenhouse during the winter. They need plenty of water and moisture. Some fertilizer.
They do respond well to fertilizer. It keeps them greener and causes better frond production. This is true of most ferns.
