CLOSED: Want: Water Hyacinth & Other Floaters
Judy,
The federal goverment have now made
Water Hyacinth illegal to own. The fine in TX is 1,000 a plant. With my luck, I through mine in compost pile.
Just thought you might wany to know. I don' know about the other water plants.
Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

I am unable to locate any information regarding a change in the USA regulations, therefore perhaps it is a Texas law. Many states do not have regulations against Water Hyacinth because it freezes during the winter, therefore is not a problem.
Can you please direct me to your source??
Thanks,
Judy

its on our illeagl list too. but in your state it isnt even on te watch lists yet. but in most it is illegal to us.
i typed in on yahoo invasive plant list for tennessee and i came up with several results but this is one of them.

imzadi - Unless I missed something - the links you provided didn't give me an additional information. Sandy stated "The federal goverment have now made Water Hyacinth illegal to own" and I asked for additional information regarding her statement.
Internet websites sell Water Hyacinth and ship it to states that do NOT have it listed as an invasive weed. It freezes in the winter in many of the states which do not have coastal territory and therefore is NOT illegal to own.
If a person is interested in this plant they need to check the laws for the state in which they reside. I could not locate a FEDERAL LAW concerning the matter. www.invasivespecies.gov
So I'm still wanting Water Hyacinth.
Judy
i didnt find anything saying the federal gov said it was illegal either. i did find it on the invasive list and if you go further in states like mine and flordia its prohibited but in others its just invasive.
the reason i posted the links was it depends on the states.. under federal law its only in certain states with good reason.
i know its very hard to get rid of here as its not cold enough to kill it off.
so yes in tennessee you can have it.
Dang I think an opportunity is being missed here. In the states where is it a problem, they should encourage their residents to ship it to the states were it will freeze in the winter, that way everyone would be happpy.
(making light of a perplexing situation lol lol)
Judy
I agree what a wonderful way to utilize the problem of excess ! :)
Judy you have mail.
And calm down people... I don't see how they can enforce any such regulation, if it exists. Water hyacinth is everywhere here, and it's not going anywhere, so the usda might as well get used to it.
I agree 100%, they are the ones who turned loose the kudzu remember.
judy,
I finally found it. It took me long enough.

There is a poster with pictures of the plants now outlawed. Sorry I did not want to come back till I found it for sure. They make it hard to find.

There are some really neat plants on there! Too bad you guys can't have them or mail them away. I like the death by North scenario. :)
I forgot I love that Salvinia too! Anybody want to get rid of some??
Judy, do you still have any Cyperus? I forgot to bring mine in.
Badseed I have an extra. Do you want to trade? I also have floaters if you need any.
Judy
Judy, I would love to have a Cyperus. Which floaters do you have? You can email if you would prefer. Any clues on what you would like? My trade lists have not been touched in a while.
