Looking for somebody with lots of mints

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

I would love to trade for a large amount of mints...alot of mine died this last winter..I got the cuttings in a trade and I think it was way too late in the season for them to get a good head start...Ive got
lime
black pepper
chocolate
curly
kentucky colonel
and a few more I would have to run out to the cold frame to see what they were...Judy

juttz
I'm might be able to do some trading later this summer.
I have several new mints from late summer 2004- Spring 05 that need to do some growing first.
Whats that Kentuckey Colonel mint??

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

PS
You can see what mints I have in my "Jim Westerfield Mints" thread.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Kentucky Colonel I believe is the mint they use in the mint Juleps for the Kentucky Derby....Ive got quite a bit if you want some...I just found uot about the Westerfield mints last year and traded for quite afew but I got them way too late in the season and most died..I would like to get some started now so they will be abit more hardy when old man winter comes around again...thanks for the offer I really appreciate it....Judy

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

I'd love some berries and cream. Been curious about that one ever since I heard of it. Cottage rose, too, if you can. I can send some ginger mint to you, instead of the orange, if you want it.

Barb

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Barb,Ginger mint would be great....add it to my box will you and I will send you a small amount since my plant isnt very big yet...Judy

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks ladies.
I will try to post when I have extra for trade.
I'd like berries and cream and banana.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Rose, I can save you some berries and cream when we do a trade of mints if thats ok?....I may find a banana to add to it if I get lucky..now why doesnt somebody do a co-op on mints?..I would buy a ton....Judy

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Now, there's an idea! I'd go for that too! Can't offer to do it, since I'm about to begin the SG swap but (hint, hint) someone else could...

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Judy
Check out Fragrant Fields. They have a nice selction a decent prices.
Check local sourses. I have noticed in recent years more places are offering more than just the basic varieties.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Im afraid to go there...lolol..ive been buying so many variegated plants lately adn came home with 76.00 worth of plants yesterday..most are variegated...lolol...thats just one time...Ive been buying like crazy this year and I dont ahve the room.....and tomorrow is our Michigan swap..more plants coming home...lolol....Judy

Victorville, CA

I think if your SG swap goes well you both should do a mint swap too. Hint, hint. Didn't I already say that in another thread, sorry! I have chocolate mint, iced hazelnut mint, banana mint, and pear mint. I'm gonna try to root some of those when I try the SG's so I'll be ready when you girls do the mint swap. Looky Sheran they're doing a mint swap!
TeeHee!

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

I second that...somebody needs to do a mint swap....Im new so I dont think I would even attempt it yet...Judy

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Judy, BassetMom & I are new too, and that didn't stop us! I never did hear back from DG admin about newbies hosting a swap, so I can only conclude that they're unconcerned.

Mints would be easier to propagate than geraniums! I've had them strike roots after just a few days in a glass of water (where I was keeping them to use in tea, not even trying to propagate them).

Probably the host for a mint swap should be somebody who's starting out with a few varieties, which isn't me (yet).... I only have 'Kentucky Colonel' Spearmint and 'Chocolate Peppermint' (which may have mutated; I swear even the original plant in its pot tastes a little different this year, but it looks the same!).... both are very nice, IMO, but that's not exactly a wide selection!

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Did someone want Pineapple mint? I'd be happy to part with any and all that I have - just don't like that one! And if someone would like to trade a piece of chocolate mint for it, that would be even better. I also have old fashioned apple mint.

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Juttz.......I will be coming to Muskegon some time soon to visit my son's ......I will bring you lots of mint....actually the mind I have is very invasive and just keeps growing and growing....will keep you posted when I will be coming...and let you know.....One of my son's lives in Fruitport and the other on Cline...You may know of him as he has a deer farm.....I will email you when I know for sure...

Deann

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Deann, which kinds of mints do you have?..I have all of the normal invasive types like orange, peppermint, kentucky colonel, apple...im really looking for the Jim Westerfield ones thats are new....do you have any of those?....Judy

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

I did hear back from Terry, BTW. She said that swaps are not in need of approval.

I would be happy to host the mint but I couldn't do it until after the SG and I think that would be too late for some regions to plant, wouldn't it? I have orange, chocolate and peppermint that I can send cuttings of, to anyone who wants them.

Barb

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Barb, I'd be happy to send mint with my scented geraniums for the swap, if anybody wants what I have.

Kathleen, I'd take some pineapple mint (especially that variegated kind) and apple mint if you have any interest in my 'Kentucky Colonel' Spearmint and 'Chocolate Peppermint' (whose ID is in some doubt, although I'd make sure you got a vegetative start of the original in its pot). I also have catnip.

BTW, I've discovered that the mints and catnip travel just fine by bubble envelope. I've been using a cardboard tube or sleeve (think, thin open-ended cardboard box) for a little extra protection around, putting moist paper towel & baggie around the roots and paper around the stems & leaves. That makes for cheaper postage on trades.... anything under 13 oz. can travel at first class mail rates.

Judy, maybe you could see if one of the nurseries that carries the Jim Westerfield mints would be willing to give a price break on a quantity purchase for a co-op.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Now this isnt saying I would take on the co-op but I just sent an email to the place that sells Jim Westerfield mints..lets see what they say...Judy

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Greeeat...you guys go have a co-op after I buy a bunch of mints. ;-)
Would we be able to buy other herbs too?

Speaking of mints how well do they do it containers?
I don't dare put anymore in the ground.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

They do great in containers..you can even sink the container in the ground and then you dont have wild mints all over the place...Im not sure if this company will do a recuded price for bulk buying but what the heck, it doesnt hurt to try...judy

Victorville, CA

Dave's does want approval on co-ops BEFORE you do them because you are using his name and as administrator to this website it makes him liable.
A swap or round robin doesn't need approval because it doesn't concern an outside third party or money.

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Judy.......Sorry, I do not have any of the Jim WEsterfield mints......

Deann

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

I have to rescind my offer - the pineapple mint seems to have succumbed to the winter. Sorry for any disappointment. If I find any, I'll be in touch.

Lomita, CA(Zone 10a)

Mints do great in pots, even over the winter. Is it possible to kill them? (grin) Not that I've ever tried... I love them too much. The little guys are even escaping the bed I have them in that is surrounded by pavers (six or more deep). Nothing holds them back! Think I'll go make a cup of mint tea, now that I'm thinking of it!

Barb

Victorville, CA

I've got a few mints, pearmint, chocolate mint, banana mint, iced hazelnut mint. The hazelnut and the pear are Jim Westerfield's. They are all doing well except for the banana seems to be having a rough time.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

jutts, you may want to give Kathy_Ann a holler, she has tons of mint varieties(I got 10 varieties from her in a trade this spring). By fall I should have extras of some of them to. Silver, Swiss ricola, and Algerian fruit are some that come to mind that you have'nt mentioned having.
