I'm a COMPLETE amateur, and am growing two cuttings for the heck of it. I figure you "Brugphiles" must be onto something! ;-) What do they need to bloom? In know they need lots of water & food (type?), and don't like alot of wind (I ended up w/shredded crunchy leaves learning f/experience!). Any tips f/you experts?

My Brug....what do they need to bloom?
I give mine at least a half day of sun, fertilizer twice a week, and keep it clean from bugs and caterpillars if I can and they do well. You shouldn't have any trouble. Just about any fertilizer will help, but Monika suggests keeping the middle number down. CalMag is one that I use and it is 15-5-15. I also use Peters 20-20-20. I've not had any trouble using the higher middle number as in the Peters fertilizer, but I also flush with water several times during the week due to having mine in pots. Those in the ground get very little fertilizer and do very well. Good Luck. I'm sure you will grow beautiful blooms this summer.
Another tip is dont be discouraged that yours hasnt Yed yet....some are just late bloomers..my CG didnt Y until it was about 6/7 feet tall and when it did it went crazy..I had over 50 blooms on it after that and it was in a pot..after it started to bloom I gave it 20/20/20 petes or MG..before that I gave it plain ole MG.....good luck, you will be a bruggie addict once you get that first bloom....Judy
I have some 30-10-10, also some 15-30-15. Would either of these be good for my brug? I'm new to growing brugs, have mine in a large pot.

Wow, madelyn65, I want to hang out in YOUR backyard! Looks fun!

p.s. My friend, MsCritterkeeper, told me to try this tried and true recipe for Brug Blooms: 1/2 cup of Epsom salts + 1 cup of Cow Manure= blooms after 13 days of continuous watering! I'm giving it a go as we speak......started today. =) I think we'll all owe her lots of photos come June 2nd!
1 cup cow manure.... is that 1/4 of a medium size cow patty?? Can't you just see me out in someone's pasture trying to make the determination on the size of a patty. lol lol
Judy
...
excuse me I'm just feeling silly.
Can you see us out in the cow pasture with a measuring cup and spoon?
We would get locked up for sure!!!
Ahhhhh, girls. ;-) I bought a lovely little bag in the organic department.......and, I'm wearing gloves!
=)
organic department of what store???
I live way out in the country.... but Jazz it has to be a dried out old cow patty or it will burn up the plant. I guess we could bust it up with a hammer. I never played with cow patties so I don't know nothing about them.
In Iowa, we call them meadow muffins and we prefer those left by horses. LOL!
The only remains in our yard are dog and bunny.. The dog doesn't get used but I have heard that bunny can gvo directly onto the plants.. haven't tried it though
Bunny poo is one of the best.. I use it and goat poo on just about everything, lol.. Be careful with it tho, it can also burn if too strong.

Jazz, send me that bunny poo. I'll pay the shipping. It is one of the best. Jeanette
I have to tell a story....
I was recovering from what the doctors told me was one of the worst surgeries anyone could have. Weeks went by and I was only eating because I had too keep up my strength. All of a sudden I was hungry.. for meatloaf. DH who is a wonderful cook, rushed out to the grocery for ingredience.
Hours later the much awaited dish was ready. Carefully he helped me to the table and there before me was something that look exactly like an old dried out cow patty. I wanted to cry and probably did. He said what's wrong I thought you were hungry for meatloaf. I told him I was but all of a sudden I didn't feel well.
Months later when he announced he would make another meatloaf I confessed the truth and showed him how to make a moist meatloaf lol lol
He is a wonderful person!!!
hmm.. wondering how to ship bunny poo
Do you label it on the outside of the box, or do they tell what is in it by the smell? LOL
Jeanette
That would be a little hard to eat, Judy. LOL!
Judy isn't Tennessee considered a Southern state? If so being a Southern belle I would bet that you watch Paula Deen's cooking show. You should give him the recipe she had for Elvis's favorite meatloaf she made the other day. Looked good and then he would be right up there with Elvis!!!
Jeanette
Hope I don't get dinged for mentioning that cooking show. Jeanette
I hope you don't either, Jnette! I'm always in fear of that "ding"ing myself! ;-)
