I have a sage plant that is now over 3 feet all around. It keeps getting bigger, and bigger! I heard that they get woody and should be removed every few years, but the leaves look fine and I don't use the stems...?
Can I divide sage (of course I'll have a gazillions starts if I do) I actually don't need the plant as it has produced mini monsters all around it. But I am curious to know.
The greek oregano is a persistent herb too. Keeps giving me babies and I am tired of yanking them out!
Monster sage taking overdivide or dump??
I don't know anything about dividing them, but if you determine that you can, I'd love to trade for a start of each. What would you be looking for in trade? (This is only if you decide to divide them, of course)
You can trade some of your mini monsters of sage & greek oregano with me.

I have never traded before--sounds like fun. Someone will have to explain it to me though. I did purchase seeds from someone on DG for stamps once though.
So let me know how to do it and we can have some fun.

Uh oh! I forgot that the DH had the kids pull weeds last weekend. Went up on the hill and alot of the baby monsters are gone! A few left. At least I know the kids do work!
I'll check better later, I gotta get back to work.
Well, believe it or not this plant is one big huge plant, no other basic trunk but the original one, I've taken cuttings off it and rooted them, it's the holts mammoth sage.
more than likely you won't be able to divide it unless some of the stems have laid down and rooted. most of the time they just keep getting bigger and bigger as one plant, not lots of small ones, mine hasn't reseeded anywhere that I can see.
Well, you are right kathy_ann. I went up and checked all the herbs and flowers out yesterday (I was almost afraid to after the kids weeded last week) but that sage plant is one big plant. One stem only. The greek oregano though has dropped little ones around all over. This must be one determined plant because the babies are rooting through the landscape fabric and it is the heavy duty stuff from Costco.
I got little oregeno coming up everywhere too LOL
At least oregano babies are sweet to pull out, trade, give away etc. because they smell so nice. More than can be said for so many weeds like Lamium, Aegopodium (Goutweed, Bishop's Weed) and that darn Houttaneyia Chameleon!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just cut all of my sages back hard as one of the first things in spring. It looks dreadful but then I get so busy with the rest of the garden I hardly notice it. When I see it again it's lovely. Love bringing in a few branches and hanging it in the kitchen for winter use.
