I am looking for a disease resistant climbing rose. How does 'Pele' perform for you?

'Pele' is my absolute favorite climbing rose! This thing grows more like a tree than a bush. The basal shoots become very thick after a few years. I was not pestered with blackspot or aphids, which attacked my other roses. The only pest that bothered it was the annual attack of the Japanese Beetles, which happens here every summer and no rose goes unscathed. Thank goodness they're only around for a couple of weeks!
I did not grow "Pele" as a climber on a trellis because I didn't have the room. I "pegged down" the long shoots horizontally instead of vertically and this resulted in producing very many side shoots to bloom as single long stem flowers.
You can, of course, grow 'Pele' normally as a climber vertically (if you have the room) and it will perform just as well, I'm sure.
The flowers are perfectly shaped, beautifully colored, extremely numerous, moderately fragrant and the foliage is healthy and disease resistant.
The only problem is to find 'Pele'. The one place I used to order it from is no longer around and I don't see it offered very much, at least in the U.S., even online. I think Hortico Roses in Canada carries it occasionally, though.
Good luck!

Thanks! Everything I needed to know. I'm sort of perverse about plants. Something that can't be found is always what I want. I will look up Hortico. The climber will be growing in a space 8 feet tall X 12 feet wide and I will have to peg it too to keep it in line. I'm all for disease resistance though. We have terrible problems with black spot and powdery mildew here. But Japanese Beetles we don't have.

Hortico roses does have it - but I need to decide by the end of the month.

I do so appreciate it.

Your photos are really lovely.

Beautiful rose!

Any one who doesn't have those @#$% beetles is one lucky gardener!

I can imagine. We have fuschia mites that make fuschias impossible to grow without systemics. I do miss my fuschias. Although the beetles sound like they have very good appetites for almost everything. Everytime I think that California's plant import rules are too strict, I remember something like this. What a pain.

Thanks for the pics and the info! Not much out there on this rose. I'm looking to buy it now from Roses Unlimited as this is part of their sale list. Thanks!

Susan
