Linda, the only thing that I can offer is what was eating big chunks like this on mine last year...that was that nasty hornworm. I saw big thunks bitten off of them and looked around and they are disguised in with the color of the green on the leaf so it's hard to find them.

Maybe someones has more to offer in the way of something eating that big of chunks off your leaves. Do you have deer nearby perhaps?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

That would be a good guess, Julie. The hornworm comes out early evening and works all night and will go back into the ground during the day. I usually start watching for them on the tomatoes around 6-7 PM.

That's about when I found them on mine too Shirley....wow, now I didn't know they lived inside the ground...thanks for telling me that, I always learn something new here :-) That's the only thing I found that was eating those huge chunks out of my leaves...then if I didn't pay attention, the sucker would have little babies on me! Nasty nasty hornworms, yuck!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

On mine last year, earwigs/pincher bugs did ALOT of damage like this.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I suspected horn worm, but could not find any. I didn't know they went in the ground in the day. Where is my flash light??????

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Shelly, I have a big problem with earwigs. And slugs and..... LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

If it is the hornworm, you will find good sized droppings.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Yeah...that's a huge hint...they leave black droppings on the leaves. icky icky

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

If I saw those bites I would say slugs! But hornworms too.

Are earwigs bad? We have tons of them and I love them cause they eat little bad guys like mealies and aphids...

Carol

Right now I have the Slugs that seem to love slimming their way up the trunk and have a feast. Earwigs are also a problem here but they tend to damage soft new growth of the brugs. However, the main food of earwigs is insects, including pests such as aphids. Sooooo they can also be useful but I don't like either of them myself!!!!

We've had slugs something awful this year, and the leaves on all my brugs either look like this or have holes in them.
