Gravel in pots

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 9a)

I was just reading some older threads. I also put gravel on top of my 4 pots. I even called a plumeria dealer in Florida and asked them some questions, including the gravel, and they said it was OK, no problem!!! Now I don't know what to do. It does get hot down here.....Help

CaCajun, Some people do put gravel on top of their pots to stabilize the cutting and keep it from moving around. It shouldn't move around if it is not being touched, and it shouldn't be touched while it is rooting. Several people have reported that the rocks heated up and caused burn marks on their cuttings. I don't like gravel on top of mine because I can't see if the soil is moist or dry, and I want the soil to have plenty of air circulation. Gravel will keep in moisture, and you don't want that while your cuttings are rooting. If I were you, I would remove the gravel. You can add more soil if you wish. You should have two to three inches of the cutting below the soil level and more if it is a large cutting.

Clare_Ca - Thanks for the info. I think I will remove the gravel this weekend. I planted the cuttings in pots. I don't know if you read my other reply to you on another thread, but just wanted to say that I used to live in Westlake Village. My father still lives there. Small world!!!!
