How much sun?

Fellsmere, FL(Zone 9b)

How much sun can hoyas take a day? I had my hoyas hanging on a line under some trees and the power company had the trees trimmed. Getting ready for hurricane season. Now my hoyas would probably get sun for 5 or more hours a day. So for now I have moved them into my screen house. Will they bloom without a lot of sun? In my screen house they will get just a little afternoon sun.

Five hours is way too much sun, especially Florida sun. The problem I found is that with too much sun my foliage became extremely pale, even with my "weak Canadian sun". My carnosas still bloomed, even moreso, but the leaves were very washed out looking. They'll still bloom without a lot of sun, mine are doing just fine with only dappled sunlight now.

Marilyn, it depends on the type of hoya and the climate zone you are in. You can bet that shade lovers are going to be shade lovers in any zone. The plants that can take a little more sun are trickier. Here in zone 9a I don't allow any of the hoya to get full sun all day or afternoon full sun. I try to keep mine under the canopy of my pecan trees or where they only get full sun in the morning. Just my opinion!

Well I guess that means that my hoyas will be staying in my screen house this summer, instead of enjoying our hot Florida breezes under the trees.

Marilyn...hoyas are basically understory plants...so few can take full sun any time. The Eriostemmas can take MORE sun, H. cv. Ruthie loves full sun and the leaves don't bleach out...but many of my other ones do....
