Dead allium leaves, with beautiful flowers??

Annapolis, MD

Hello!
I am perplexed, my 3 Purple Sensation allium flowers are beautiful but the leaves look dead (brown and totally limp). Any idea why this is happening? My Globemaster allium leaves look fine and they are planted only 2 feet from the Purple Sensation.

Should I just cut the leaves off?

It's common with alliums to have the leaves start to fade when the blooms are still in their prime - when you think they are from the onion family that's what they do when they've produced their flowers. My alliums leaves tend to turn brown at the tips and gradually die down. Are yours all brown?

Yup! Brown and limp. Yuck. But the flowers look great with my irises. Now that I know this is a common thing, after they finish blooming I'll move my irises in front of the allium to hide the leaves for next year.

Thanks for responding! I was worried I had some strange allium disease or something.

Do your leaves look like this or are they looking as though they are rotting?

Another clump - these are in bud

Yup! That is exactly what they look like. I have cut off the brown parts so it doesn't detract from the beauty of the flowers. I'll try and get a photo up soon.

Oh! So that's what happened with mine. I saw the brown leaves on my purple alliums and thought I had done something really wrong, such as overfertilized or too much iron-phosphate slug bait.

Are these reliably perennial? I'm in zone 8b and here in the pacific northwest we get a lot of rain fall, winter, and spring (raining out there and has been for 5 weeks now). My worry is rot. I've amended my soil, but it still has a heavy clay base.

Here's a pic of one of my alliums, not sure which kind.

Allium seem to come back in 7a, but I'm not sure about zone 8. Here is a photo of mine...

Those are beautiful! I have some that were supposed to get that large, but they're only about 18" tall. I think they miss the sun too.

To be successful they like full sun but I have some growing in an east facing border which only gets morning sun and they are fine. They seed around quite freely so they pick their own spot! They come back every year without any special treatment. There is a huge range of alliums and they grow from 6 inches tall to 5 feet. Yours look lovely.

My silly husband loves the allium but thinks they don't have a suitable name for flowers that looks like they came from a Dr. Seuss book....so he renamed them. In my house and among the kids on our street, allium are called "Purple Schnotzberries" :-)

LOL!!!!! Well now that's what they'll be here too! If I can get my hands on some-- DH I swear is gonna revoke my nursery privleges! LOL!!!!!!
