Sarracenia leucophylla

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

Myself and a couple other Master Gardener friends went to a piece of property that will soon be cleared and leveled to make a strip mall.. like we really need another strip mall here when there are some that are empty... anyway.. I tried to do my share in rescuing a few of the native plants that will be bull-dozed and forever gone from this property.

This first photo shows the actual *flower* The second photo shows what it looks like once the flower dies... I think it is gorgeous either way!

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

thanks everyone... the plants are in their new homes.. and today didn't seemed stressed out at all... thanks to the last hurricane what used to be fairly shaded is now fairly sunny so they should like their new home...

Elye... Donna's hubby called me when she got out of surgery. She is doing well.. they only had to fuse one disk... they placed a metal rod and 6 screws in her spine... I'll be going over there next weekend to give her hubby a break and take care of her.. I'll tell her that you asked...

Good for you MzMunchken. There is a piece of properety about 3 miles from my house, it is right on teh highway and it was bulldozed last year for the same purpose. Most likely another strip mall and as you said, like we need another when there is already so many just sitting there with no occupants already.

Well this piece of land also has these very same pitcher plants that you posted a pic of as well as a variety of one of our native orchids which bloom clusters of little bright orange flowers. I

I've said for years now that I was going to go and dig them but was always afraid of being caught by the wrong people, but now they are in going to be destroyed because i'm sure whoever the land developer is doesn't know what they are or for that matter even care. All they can see is $$$$ signs. Why should they care if they destroy something that nature has created that is in very short supply in this area anyway?

My problem now is that the plants got mowed over last fall. I went to wally world yesterday and have to pass right by the property but didn't noticec the plants coming up yet. Seems like the pitcher plants should be up but I know the wild orchid doesn't bloom until later in the summer.

If no one has bought the porperty and development hasn't begun by then I will take a chance and go and dig as many of the plants as I can and try to relocate them.

It's sad that people care so much about money that they will destroy plants and animals for it with little or no regard as to what damage they may be causing in the long run. Some of these plants including the venus flytraps that grow wild here are very rare in this area and if i'm not mistaken you can be fined and jailed for digging them.

I guess maybe I should check with some of the locacl government offices and see who I need to contact and let them know about the plants before I go and dig them. Maybe i'll find some one who cares and they can see about relocating the plants ,I think the chances of finding that person are probably slim to none though.

This is a link to a picture of the orchids that will be destroyed if this land gets developed and i'm sure it will in a matter of time.
