Its suppose to be hardy to zone 6.
I'm wondering if anybody has experienced it being hardy in zone 5.
Thanks! CR
Anybody growing Rosemary "Arp" in Zone 5?
I am going to give this a try in my zone 5 (though technically zone 6) garden. I'll cross my fingers until next spring.
I'll be giving it a try this year in my very zone 5, sometimes 4 garden this year. Will be watching it carefully.
Well I have 2 and I'm going to leave them outside. Will probably mound some soil and leaves on them.
Zone 5 with a little protection might even be better than zone 6. I think what kills our rosemary during the winter is when the weather warms up enough that the plant foolishly begins putting out new growth, only to have the temperature suddenly plunge again.
I'd suggest a nice deep ring of mulch around them, but not actually covering the crown, as most herbs are pretty sensitive about having their crowns covered (they get rot). It will also help if you can put them near a wall or a boulder, or even put some big rocks near them to serve as a heat sink.... see if you can make a warmer micro-climate for them!
critter great info!
Would it be alright to put leaves or straw on top of them vs. soil?
I might plant mine on the south side of the house.
I've let a grower who sells at our state arboretum's plant sale talk me into buying this twice. (If at first you don't succeed????) He told me it's withstood his -30 degree winters and is a huge plant. Well, this time I protected it better(I thought) by having it up next to the house and out of the wind, and it still doesn't appear to have made it. The branches I've scratched all show no signs of life. So please take really good precautions (although I can't think of what would've helped my last one more than what I did except maybe a stone wall for warmth.) Good luck! Hope I'm not being too much of a wet blanket.
Mick I'm wondering you you had a true version of Arp?
Then again hardiness of -30º sounds like he was stretching it a bit.
Thats much colder than zone 5 even.
All I can do is try too.
I have also lost the Arp twice - two different years in my z6. This year however, one of my regular rosemary has survived (2 others are dead I think), and even the pineapple sage is showing new leaves from the roots. And 2 regular sage also made it and one is getting ready to bloom. I am quite surprised because all these had not happened before in the 9 years that we have been in this location..
I'm in zone 7a and have lost every rosemary I ever had and it never stops me from buying more. This time I'm going to try putting some mini boulders around it come September. It will be up against the house and get the heat from the cement and it does face south so I'm sure to lose it anyhow and buy it again and again. Hey, that's what keeps us all going!
