Anybody Feeling Generous?
Hi all,
My daughter started Daisy Scouts this year. She will be a Brownie next year. I just became the Scout House Manager. I am still figuring out what all that entails...I DID get the go-ahead to garden this evening. Wouldn't you know it, that was my first question!
I can buy a little and get reimbursed but that comes out of the fund, so I'd rather not do that - that money should be used for the kids. I wanna buy it all myself or pay the postage if someone wants to share. (hint hint)
There is a bare patch right outside the front door, pretty small. It's in full sun. I envision tall green plants (maybe green glads?), feverfew (I will have seeds later) and low growing shamrocks. I have alot of oxalis (the pink kind) but I think the white kind would be more suited. I wanna plant that along the walkway.
On the side in part shade there is a long strip of grass. I would like to make that a themed garden. The first thing that comes to mind is strong silver and gold theme. Then I could make a sign (maybe with my girls next year) for it with the song "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other's gold..." You get the idea.
So, basically I am looking for plants and plant ideas. And more theme ideas. Mostly green, brown, daisy, definately shamrock (trefoil) shapes, and silver and gold. I already have some dusty miller I can part with.
I can pay postage for sure or trade in the fall when I have more stuff in my own garden. Seeds are welcome, too, as long as they are super-easy. Pretty much I would have to be able to plant, water and walk away. I can only get out there about once a week.
Ideas are most welcome.
As you can see, I am extremely excited about this. I am going there to clean right now, actually.
Thanks,
Michelle

This is so neat, I remember when My daughter was in scouts, she's a junior now in highschool. I was a big part of her troop. we had so much fun
I have some silver & gold crysanthemums their variegated tiny yellow flowers, the variegation really stands out, i can do some for postage if you'd like.
let me know
kathy_ann
How about lambs ear they have a silver look and kids love to touch them?
I have rooted Euonymus 'Emerald & Gold'. I still have your addy from our recent trade and can send it out as soon as you say...."Go". Nothing needed in return....have fun with the girls!

kathy_ann, you have mail.
miss, i do have lamb's ears i can share but can never get them to transplant without withering away. any tips?
Kachinagirl, "GO!" Do you want postage for them?
Thank you, everybody!
I forgot to mention, I have been Co-Leader this year and it's been great fun. I was a Brownie for 4 years (yeah, I know that's one year too many) and my mom was a Co-Leader.
I just spent 4 hours scrubbing the floor in the Scout House. It reminded me of my favorite story from my Brownie Handbook where the couple (?) left milk and bread out and lBrownies would come and clean for them at night. Do I remember that right? I'm pretty sure there was a rhyme in there somewhere, too. :)
I also just remembered the song about the smile in your pocket...that makes me think sunflowers...anything else come to mind?
And of course I'll have to plant some curiosities...sensitive plant, etc. But I'll do that next year, getting too late for most annuals here.
Michelle
Can you use any of the following plants?
For silvers in sun to part shade -
low: variegated cream/green vinca minor
Hosta plantaginea (late, long white fragrant tubular flowers - the 19th cen "funkia" of Gertrude Jekyll - have seen hummingbird perched on those flowers)
Boltonia incisa (tiny, very double daisies that have the misty, cloud effect of gypsophilia, but do well in shade as well as in sun and also, if cut back in early June, will give a show at end of flowering season. This is the Mongolian aster of Elizabeth Lawrence. drought tolerant.)
White cleome - I have a ton of volunteer seedlings with only the first true set of leaves, so they might transplant okay at this stage
Cranesbill 'Biokovo' - low; white flowers with pale pink blush
Seedling volunteers from Columbine 'Black Barlow' - they will probably be a mix of pale to deeper pink or purple - also known as 'Granny Bonnets' - double, tall
A polyanthus type of primrose - bunches of small, crimson flowers on 4" stalks
A volunteer seedling of Helleborus x hybrida
Lychnis coronaria - lots of little volunteers, is supposed to prefer full sun, but volunteers even in shade. I would give this one sun, if possible, but who knows...
Daylily from friend Cindy who didn't know its name - small, pale flesh-pink with black purple zone; very profuse; blooms over a very long season; tall scapes
Campanula poscharskyana - small blue bells in profusion above ground carpeting, waterfall-over-rocks foliage
Requiring sun, but putting up with half a day of sun -
Thyme - gold variegated, lemon thyme; makes a carpet; nice for edging
Waterlily 'Fabiola' - double pink; We grow it in a sunken 3' diameter, approximately circular fiberglass "pool" where the old well was outside our back door. A lined whiskey barrel might do. DH and I just cleaned out our two "ponds" yesterday, and I potted up 4 little ones in quart size yogurt containers. Have never done this before and don't know if they'll get to your garden through the mail, etc. okay. You're welcome to try it.
Balsam seeds
I will send at least one of each of the above, try to send 3, and at least 6 each of the small volunteer seedlings on Monday, if this will work for you. If you could send maybe half of whatever the postage turns out to be, that would help.
Let me know - will need your addy.
Karen

I wish I was able to go out toward Dayton and dig you some. Sesitive plant is a native here. I wish I knew where you could find some to dig.
Where it Taylor?
I have golden Euonymus. I could send some cuttings.
Blessings
Sandy ^8^
Ooooh, I have a plant that would be perfect.... Silver Thyme ... hee hee - now, I just need to root some and get it to you. Could be a couple of weeks. Is that ok?
As for the tall green plants out front - what about cannas?
~Carla
Michelle, they will wither but normally this time of year will just grow new from the roots
I have silver sage...
Barb
Nope. Have fun! They're on the way. K
Thank you, KachinaGirl!
The rest of you have mail!
Michelle
PS - love this idea, Witch. I remember being a 9 year old girl scout on an army base in Germany, where the troop sang that round about lily of the valley and coral bells over the garden wall. There were no lilies of the valley or coral bells or garden walls there - just "well maintained" grass and rain and projects like making "sit-upons" we had to occupy and stay put on indoors. Major Yuck. So, I am delighted to vicariously make up for lost time with this wonderful project of yours.
One of the most poignant complements I ever got about my garden where I have now lived for 31 years came from one of the vandals who used to help the rest of the neighborhood thugs keep my garden ripped up, stomped down and smashed. I had planted 50' of morning glory 'Heavenly Blue' on a boundary chain link fence, and he actually came up to me and said they were the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. What a moment!
Well, after the first 10 years of trying to keep our hovel from collapsing while under siege from neighborhood vandals, all of a sudden, all the negative stuff stopped. (Actually, I suppose it never actually does, but at least the kind that discourages gardening did.)
Exposing children to good things - especially something they can surround themselves physically in - seems a terribly important thing to do to me - and for all of us as well.
Thank you for this opportunity, Witch.
Witch I don't have anything to send since the only thing I have in my yard (other than weeds is...well more weeds *G*) But I'm heading out to Wal-Mart this afternoon and I'll look for plants or maybe markers, odds n' ends. If I don't post again remind me cause I'm about as scatter brained as they come.
Saint
Are you still looking for the white-blooming shamrocks?
bluespiral, lily of the valley and coral bells over the garden wall? is that a GS song? If so, I have a purpose for the other wall section! I so agree with everything you said!
araness, thank you!
tropicalaria, yes i am still looking for those ... do you have some?
Michelle
HI, One of my ancesters wrote "Silver Threads among the Gold"..
I have the striped green/white grass (it spreads -so yu might want to keep it is check with a cut out pot(if you want it. Also have a little Ladys' Mantle-a silverish green that does have tiny yellow blooms-but holds that drop of water that fairies drink -will need quite a bit of shade there.
Could divide my mini-Stella-some of the blooms were not much larger than thimbles and it re-blooms.
Differnent types of creeping yellow bloomed sedum.
Have to keep on thinking-the windy, rainy 40 degree weather has presented a mind freeze...
Marcia,
Sounds cool! What color is the mini-stella? Can I giev you postage for those? Thanks!
Nice song, I just heard the midi.
Michelle
The mini-stella is bright yellow-just a tat lighter than the regular Stella. The foliage here gets about 8" tall.
Are you just interested in the mini-or some of the rest? PLMK
ummm... wanna stick to green, yellow/green (the Ladys' Mantle looks good), white, brown, daisy, shamrock, silver, gold and curiosity (for now). so if it's straight up yellow i'll pass on that.
thanks, let me know if you send and what the postage is and i will put to good use and take pics eventually.
:)
Michelle
ps - anything turqoise green/teal is great too, the junior GS uniform is that color.
michelle, I"m gonna box this up sunday, then tell you the total ok
i haven't forgotten you though just wanted to let you know
Here, heehee, is what I remember of that old girl scout song:
1 2 3 4 123
C ^ B A G ^ ^
White cor-al bells,
4 1 2 3 4 1234
E F A G F E^^^
* u_pon a slen_der stalk,
1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 12 34 1234
D F E G F A C E D^ B^ C^^^
Li-lies of the val-ley deck my gar-den wall.
(back to beginning of tune)
Oh, can't you hear,
a hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm,
That will only happen when the fairy sings.
*At this point, B starts singing from the beginning while A keeps going.
The first line is the rhythm, 4 counts to the measure.
The second line is the notes
The third line is the words
Does anyone remember how the rest of it goes? Maybe MarciaGeiger can make up the missing line?
Now, Marcia, how did Silver Threads among the Gold go?
I'm going to root around the internet and see if that flower fairy artist par excellence, Cicely Mary Barker, did any of these flowers. Will bring back the link if I find it.
kathy_ann, thanks so much.
bluespiral, you have me so curious now! gonna look thru some GS song sites!

I remember singing something like this one below,
Make New Friends
Submitted by Sue Lynch
Make new friends,
but keep the old.
One is silver,
the other is gold.
A circle is round,
it has no end.
That's how long,
I will be your friend.
A fire burns bright,
it warms the heart.
We've been friends,
from the very start.
You have one hand,
I have the other.
Put them together,
We have each other.
Silver is precious,
Gold is too.
I am precious,
and so are you.
You help me,
and I'll help you
and together
we will see it through.
The sky is blue
The Earth is green
I can help
to keep it clean
Across the land
Across the sea
Friends forever
We will always be
FYI Michelle....when the Euonymus 'Emerald & Gold' get there...they are mostly "Emerald" because I had them rooting in a glass inside. They will "Gold" up with some sunshine!

My whole family did scouting -- girl scouts, cub scouts, boy scouts -- my parents were both leaders, too. I think every uncle & cousin on my dad's side is an Eagle Scout, as is my brother. Dad used to joke that he had 2 requirements for the guy I married -- the dog had to like him, and he should be an Eagle Scout! DH just missed meeting the family dog way back when we were dating in college (many years before we got married!), but since our golden retriever pretty much adored everyone, Dad let that one go. He is an Eagle Sout, however!
Here's the song as I recall it:
White Coral Bells
Upon a slender stalk;
Lilies of the vally line my garden walk.
Oh, how I wish
That I could hear them ring!
That will happen only when the faries sing.
BTW, I'd never seen the verses to "Make New Friends" before -- thanks!
I think I may have a Girl Scout Songbook somewhere on an upstairs bookshelf, so I'll check in there too.
I thought "Silver Threads Among the Gold" was a different song.... My dad only knows the first couple lines to a lot of songs, but I think I can remember him singing, "Darling, I am growing old.... Silver threads among the gold....." Is that the one your ancestor wrote, Marcia?
I'll keep your new garden plans in mind when I'm dividing plants or sowing seeds. I had some seeds for a "white marguerite type daisy," but no luck with them in their wintersown container. Maybe I'll get some by direct sowing. I do have some little wintersown seedlings of 'Crazy Daisy' coming up, so if they do well I'll send you a couple of them (probably too little to ship well now). I may be able to split a start from my clump of Shasta Daisies as well, if you haven't found them yet. So, nothing to send at the moment -- but I'll work on it!
I was a GS; older DD was Daisy and Brownie. I was co-leader for couple yrs too. Fun. Younger DD wants to do GS, but I was too busy w/ school and work, studying, etc... Bad Suzi! Knew couple verses of Make new friends, but not all those. Good to know the links for the songs, we didn't have all those options years ago.
Hey Michelle, you said something about sunflowers. Do you need +/or want any sunflower seeds? I've got some Maximillian plus about 5 other kinds . Let me know and I'll get some of each on their way to you. ~ Suzi :)
I need to check and see about who wrote the song-I know that it is listed in our family tree-but since it was not rock/roll,( when I looked at the FT) I don't remember the name.
Maybe I could get royalties and buy more plants!!!!!
>Maybe I could get royalties and buy more plants!!!!!
Hahaaa! We all share the same one-track mind. No pun intended.
Thanks everyone!
Suzi, If you want to send sunflowers I'll use them eventually (probably next year) and let the girls plant them. Right now just looking for general girl scout theme colors to have there year-round.
Thank you so much, everybody!
Keep the ideas coming!
Michelle
I have lots of Shasta daisies! White Yarrow? Also have several varieties of golden yellow day lilies. LMK
JanetS
Hi all,
I planted a bunch of stuff today. I gotta go to work but I'll post pics later or tomorrow. Thanks!
Michelle
Well then, how about I harvest you some fresh seeds for 2006? That way my DD can grow them for your GS to plant. She will love that idea! Had gotten several kinds since haven't grown them since TX (15 yrs), so this should be fun. Just remind me, so I don't forget! - Suzi :)
Michelle, did you get teh sage?
Barb
BriarRose74, sounds great!
BassetMom, are you talking about the Big Sage? I did get it and babying it big time. It looks like one for sure will make it, maybe both. One looks about 1/2 dead, the other looks good. I really hope they make it. Been trying forever it seems.
Michelle
