Floater's or sinker's...

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Ok I know I've asked this before but any help would help...I don't usually soak seeds lately, just plant them, but this time I did. Which are viable seeds....the floaters? Or...the sinkers? lol...I need your help and maybe we can help some of the new people here who are doing seeds this year too.

Julie, not positive on Brug seeds, but all my other seeds, the floaters are the ones to pitch, (hollow inside) and the sinkers are "full" ;)

Yes, but plant them all. Sometimes a little piece of the cork keeps a seed floating when it really is good.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I did a test...half the seeds I soaked, half I didn't and they all came up at the same time! (which is amazing because usually I only get one or two...must've said the right words).....LOL

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh Carole but were they 'sinker's or floater's' when you soaked them? And which did you plant, the sinkers or the floaters? lol I'm taking a consensus here. I have done it like you said Shirley and the other way...both work but I always forget how this works when you soak them. Seems like I would just learn and just plant them and not be so disappointed in the viability of the seed after soaking. This is depressing. Half my seeds I have aren't sinking....they're floating...take that back ...less than half. **sigh**

Thanks everyone for your input...keep on posting, I would really like to know whether anyone soaks and plants both the sinkers and the floaters.

hmmm, and I thought maybe this was a misplaced thread about toilet tricks.

Well Julie, floaters are the scum to be scooped off and tossed when it comes to all the tree seeds I've sprouted. Viable seeds sink with that big tree crammed in there.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

BrugAddict, sounds like you are going to be the one to put it to the test!!!!

Julie the rule of thumb with seeds is to throw out the floaters but that is not the case with Brugs from my personal experience.
I've had many floaters that grew into nice seedlings. I think the corky covering on them can contain air pockets that keep them afloat.

Greenwell Springs, LA(Zone 8b)

well if the sinkers are the ones to keep, and the floaters are the ones to toss..i'm in trouble. out of about 15 seeds i planted yesterday, 2 (count 'em) TWO sank.

hopefully this is a rumor.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

No it's actual fact but has exceptions as with brugs and their corky covering.

Guess it doesn't apply to coconuts which are seeds themselves but have spread across the oceans by floating in that husk and with the hollow center.
:)

lol! Blaine

Yep, this is all information that I will use in making my decision lol... keep the info (opinions) coming cos' I think myself and other's ho are new to growing seeds will enjoy seeing the outcome. I'm really thinking that I'll just plant them all and see what happens. First I'll scoop off the ones on top and skim out the sinkers...plant them separately to see !

Sorry I can't reply as much as I would want to but I'm doing the grammy thang today and the rest of the week, probably till July lol....moma and daddy got jobs today! :-) Grammy time!

i actually did seperate the 2 sinkers from the rest...just because someone told me the ones that do sink are viable...it just doesn't sit right with me, i'm with scooter. cork DOES float and that seems like common sense...i know that float/sink thing applies to other seeds, and that can be pretty reliable.

guess i'll see what happens. i wrapped my seeds in paper towels, dipped in diluted liquid rooting hormone and placed in plastic baggies. i have them outside underneath my carport, on the concrete...cuz its nice and warm. i also sprayed with dilute fungicide before i wrapped them up. i'll come back and let yall know how many floaters germinated vs. the sinker. (even though i only had two sink)

but i have to say i'm pretty sure that they float because of the outer layer.

Julie, I plant all of them, better safe than sorry. Once I thought the seeds weren't good and a couple of months later I found plants where I had tossed the seeds...

I love it then a theory has been advanced, then action is taken to prove or disprove it.

I will anxiously await the outcome of the two above 'seed tests'.

:) without you, judy, my seed test would not be possible ((((((hugs)))))))

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yup, we used to use corks for bobbers when fishing.

What's the heartburn for planting them all?

Jeanette

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Ok I've planted every single seed I had and identifying floaters (f) and sinkers (s) on the tags with the name. I should see some kind of germination by the mid part of May. I'll keep ya posted. These were seeds I'm growing out for Datdog (Kristi)

I'll add that I let my seeds soak one extra day cos' I'm still burning up with fever and have the flu. I can see how some may have air pockets in the cork, keeping them afloat because that one extra day sunk a few seeds...soooooooooo lol...I had more sinkers than floaters. Will keep you posted how they germinate for me.

I am miserable sick and would kindly take any of your prayers. I'm supposed to be babysitting my 3 month old grand daughter cos' mommy and daddy are working now.
