Can anyone tell me the name of a plant that looks a lot like Crocosmia crocosmiiflora, but instead of blooming in late summer, it blooms in February in zone 9? Thanks!
Name of early blooming crocosmia like plant
Watsonia?
no - not watsonia. but thanks for answering!
Could it be a false freesia. I adore those.
Not false freesia either - I just looked up the description of false freesia - the plants that I am looking to identify are much taller than 6-12 inches, it is about 2 feet tall, and the bloom time is different. Maybe it is a croscosmia, but a cultivar that blooms earlier? Thanks, RubalnMS for your input.
Could it be Lapeirousia laxa (aka Anomatheca cruenta) or is that a synonym for false freesia? I thought they were some type of crocosmia when I first saw them. Sprays of small coral red flowers with dark red spots in the center. Sprays can supposedly be up to a foot or two in height although mine are about a foot. Here it blooms in Feb (Zone 9a). There are some nice photos of L. laxa on the web if you want to check it out.
Barksy - I just looked up some images of Lapeirousia laxa and though it is similar to what I had in mind, the flowers are not quite the same. It is more tightly lined up along the flower stem like the crocosmias. I have never heard of Lapeirousia laxa before so thanks for introducing me to this plant.
What color flower? What height? How about Chasmanthe? http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?search_type%5Bcommon%5D=contains&searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&search_type%5Bfamily%5D=contains&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&search_type%5Bgenus%5D=contains&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=chasmanthe&search_type%5Bspecies%5D=contains&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&search_type%5Bcultivar%5D=contains&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&search_type%5Bhybridizer%5D=contains&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&Search=Search
Potemup - they could be chasmanthe. I actually bought some chasmanthe bulbs a few years ago, but they did not do well and bloomed just as the frost hit. The flowers that I have in mind blooms a little later when we normally do not have frost and is a lot healthier - at least the specimens that I have seen growing in other people's garden. I mentioned these plants to one of my co-workers and he told me about his crocosmia-like plants that bloom in February and promised me some bulbs. It is too late to get any photos now, but if his promise comes through, I may have some photos next year. (Provided I get computer saavy enough to post photos)
oh - the bloom colors are dark orange, about 2-3 feet high. Thanks Potemup!
