....or is all of the growth of the brug above the "Y" ?
I have been wondering this for a long time and thought I would finally ask! Anyone know?
Does the "Y"get higher from the ground as the tree grows....
Are you speaking of seedlings or cuttings? Some of my seedlings reach 8 or more feet before they Y. Cuttings can be taken from the flowering portion of a plant, so they would Y much shorter. I'm sure someone will come along to give more information.
OK...maybe I asked my question wrong...on either a cutting or a seedling, let's say that the first Y is 3 feet from the ground....as the tree grows will all the future growth only be after the Y ? or will the trunk of the brug below the Y, not only get wider in diameter....will it get taller too? So that say in 5 years or so the Y would be up at 4 feet, for example??? Or will it always stay at 3 feet...no matter how old the tree gets???
What I have noticed, is if I leave a sucker attached to the mother plant even after it Ys, the entire sucker grows so fast, all getting taller so even below the Y grows well. Once I cut it off, it slows dramatically. If I pot it up, the Y stays more or less in the same place. If I plant it in the ground, I will get some over all growth including below the Y, but it is only dramatic on the top growth. Do you want standards, Margie?
Thanks kell...yes, I love the standards....I remove all of the lower leaves so that most of my look like trees. Actually my seedlings are the ones with the highest Y's !!!
Yes, that is often the case. Though last year, many of my seedlings were little bushes, some Ying at 2 ft as I recall.
