I've never seen this vine before, and never had this horrible stuff on my ear before! I don't know if I'm having a reaction to something at the dentist's office or if this is Poison Ivy. I'm needing an ID before I call my dentist!
...and if it IS Poison Ivy, do I just pull it up? How big are the roots?! Shoot, I was excited about this new "volunteer" too! I might be rethinking volunteers from now on...
Need ID quick! Poison ivy?!
I am never quite sure what it looks like, but I am going to say yes.
I keep spraying it with round up. I would not touch it if I did not have to. As the vine and roots contain the oil that causes the rash.
My problem is it is coming thru my neighbors wood fence and I can't get to it. He is never there.
Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
You might want to compare your mystery plant to the pictures at www.poison-ivy.org.
I just don't know!! It doesn't have jagged edges, but neither does a lot of the pictures I've looked thru. I suddenly have some horrid blistering stuff on my ear that someone suggested was poison ivy, but I've never seen poison ivy or had it before. Then when I saw the pics it looked like the new plant I have. :( I guess I'll just head to the dr. today. boohoo
It doesn't look like most of the poison ivy I am familiar with. It does look like a pea vine that grows wild. I think it is called butterfly pea. I am just guessing, and I would not touch it until I knew for sure.
From your photo a case can be made for pea vine (very desireable) or poison ivy (very NOT) http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/65062/

Are those THORNS on the base of the stem? If that is the case... I don't believe PI has thorns.
I was thinking that the climbing part looked like a Clematis, but not if it has thorns!

The long petiole on the middle leaf has me leaning towards poison ivy!! LOL
Really? oh my...someone on the ID forum said it was definitely not. I am not sure that anyone is going to be able to tell from my small plant. I sure hope it's something good, but then that means I'm having a reaction to something else, like latex. I am going to have to pull the plant up anyways since I can't be positive. I guess I can stick it in a pot and see if it blooms. ...and what are you laughing at John?! ;)
I have poison ivy on the elm tree on the side of my house and it does not look like that. Most all poison ivies I know of the little node where the three leaves meet in colored a redish color not green.
If you're going to pot it up, maybe you can show it to your extension agent or a Master Gardener.
Editing to add: I've read that a lather of Fels Naptha soap will clear up a case of poison ivy very quickly.

Yes, was just thinking taking it to the ext. office would be what to do. I do have a bit of Fels Naptha that I'll use, but hopefully the steroid shot that I just got for Poison Ivy (!) will stop it! ouch...
The thing about poison ivy is that it morphs into many forms even from the same mother plant! If its pea vine it shoud soon flower shouldn't it? Poison ivy will keep growing and become more obvious? The red comes later.
Whatever it is is going to grow in a pot alone for now. lol I am too old to be experiencing these kind of new things!! It's GROSS and embarassing! If it were Halloween I would enjoy grossing out my son and his friends, but right now I'm just gross. LOL Although...they still might be interested. They were very intrigued when I had a blood vessel burst in my eye. One of my son's fellow Kindergardener's told me at lunch that day that his dad had that happen, but a bouncer had punched him in the eye. LOL
I felt that after this trauma and the shot that I deserved a new plant, so I stopped by a favorite nursery and got me a Jerusalum sage and some sort of penstemmon. :))
Sounds better than steroids or getting punched by bouncers! :-D
Yes, a new plant can make up for the bad actions of another plant. :)
;-)
My DH says if the leaves are alternate it is poison ivy.
What does that mean?
Just went out and looked - there is a couple of new babies by my older p.i. they have a red/greenish tint to the stem itself. if the stem is pure green then this is porb. not p.i. Asked the guy next door and he said it looked like one of the vines from the hay field and to pull it out or it could choke out other plants. Either way sounds like one that needs to go? LMK what you do and or find out it is - Mitch
