oh pooh, did I buy the wrong D.E.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

I got the swimming pool D.E., was that a mistake. I havent opened it yet and could take it back !

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

No it's fine. That is what I used. It is much cheaper and I researched the Internet real good before I bought. Some websites said one was better, then another would say the other was better. I couldn't find any studies to prove the Ag or food grade DE was better, it's probably the same stuff.

My mother has used the swimming pool DE for 20 years!! So go ahead and use it.

What is it for? sorry nosey but really curious what for ??? de???

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Mainly to kill snails and slugs. It takes a toll on other crawly things like ants, spiders etc., but knocks out the slugs.

Here is an old thread of mine on the subject

Thanks Judy, I hated to lug that 24 lbs back to home depot but didnt want to waste time and money if it was not effective at all. I know you can sprinkle it on hosta, brugs etc in a dry form and I think Brugie mixes it in a spray bottle and mists with it. I know you have to be careful to wear a mask because it is harmful if inhaled.
Thanks

well, thanks Judy, I did take the pool d.e. back and get the other kind, you are right-sites seem to disagree on whether or not you need the horticultural stuff-now I just have to get it out there ! :)

Judy, do you use a powder sprayer to put your DE out?? TIA!!!

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

I think Judy sprinklers here and Brugie mixed it with water. If you mix it with water, how much powder would you put in a handheld sprayer?

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I just toss mine all around, that way I know the area I covered without doubt and for me it would be easier than mixing then spraying. First rain or watering you do and it's going to wash it off the plants and into the ground anyway. It's not too bad to float in the air unless there is a breeze, which is most of the time here.
